Artist description
WARSHIP is the original "Disco Sucks" band.
The songs and material presented here are all copyright
Jim Hershey, but WARSHIP, at the time of it's creation,
belonged to the US NAVY and the crew of the USS Rathburne.
The catalog of songs is going to be ever growing so add
this page to your bookmarks and check back often. It's
taken 23 years to transfer the songs from an old cassette
tape to this MP3 format. I want it to be the best it can be. |

Artist History
WARSHIP was created out of the boredom of US Navy life
during WesPac (Western Pacific Cruises). The "Old Man"
of the USS Rathburne (FF-1057) brought, then 3rd class
Sonarman, Jim Hershey into his stateroom and asked him
what the Navy could do to make him happy. (It seems Jim
was one of the more "rebel" of the sailors and making him
happy turned out to be a chore). Mr. Hershey said to the
Commander, "I'd like to start a ships band, sir!" So it
began. When the ship pulled into Subic Bay, adjacent to
Olongapo City in the Philippines, the Welfare and
Recreation Committee, headed by Lt. Cawthra, handed Jim
a check for $1200 which he was to use to purchase the
needed equipment.
Jim grabbed his bass player friend, Barry Ruhlman, and
off they went into the city to purchase amps, guitars,
cables, mics, mixing boards and what-not. The amps all
were the highest quality "Fendlers", the guitars made
from the best balsa available...
WARSHIP was born, the rest is history.
