BIOGENESIS - The Mark Bleeds Through (2001)
This is a fresh and innovative piece of art. Biogenesis have came up with a riff-laden sound completely their own. The vocals vary from a mid harsh tone (similar to Steve Rowe only better and more intense) to a completely gothic style akin to Saviour Machine. The music has many moods, going from a dark and modern low end guitar tone to very technical thrash style that would please fans of Believer and Tourniquet. This is a hard cd to describe because the sound is so unique and varied. The most amazing thing is that when I first heard that it mixed a lot of styles I was afraid that it just wouldn't sound "cohesive", that idea was totally wrong. The band blends these styles to perfection in a seething cauldron of metal that will make any critic stand up and take notice. The music here is heavily thrash oriented with a modern edge to it. The guitar work is nothing short of amazing. With each additional listen I can hear something new that I had not noticed before. It may take a few listens to appreciate this but the fact is, James Riggs (guitarist) is one of the best players in the Christian metal scene today. He uses a lot of "licks" that I haven't heard the likes of since the glory days of Tourniquet. Musically this is technical enough to hold its own with metal purists and also accessible enough to crossover and attract a portion of the "nu-metal" crowd. The production is great and this is one of the best efforts I have seen come from the Australian based Rowe Productions since it's inception. -- Review by Norm
