Artist History
The Story of Big Metal Rooster:
The birth of Big Metal Rooster happened many, many moons ago in an old cable company warehouse. Two minds came together like spam and grapefruit. Derek Hein and Tom Fleming found that they had very closely related musical ideas and began playing together in July of 2000. They were joined on many occasions with many other musicians, one of which was Dave Wolfe. Dave's original role left him behind a drum set holding down the groove. Although this would not prove to be Dave's final role in the band, there was still a connective creativity abundant in the music. As time passed Dave slid into the role of rhythm guitar player, while the band still experimented with other drummers. The first gig came on November 25th in Lawrence, Ks. Big Metal Rooster, then known as Real Dave featuring Who's Tuff (a cover band at the time), was the opening act for Blue Heaven, which ironically had a drummer by the name of Ben Archer. The gig, although a great learning experience, would demonstrate a need for a change.
Tom began writing many songs such as "Thom Lundgren," "Roadside," and "Funk's Grove." Dave too, began working on new songs like "Cow (bluebeardsanctimoniuswatermoccasin)." Practices also would result in many band-written songs like "Mlard," "Pantz," "Eighty," "Mr. Ginsburg," and "Geiiga." As time passed by, creative differences would slowly separate the band from its drummer. Coincidentally, at that very same time, Ben Archer's band was having a conflict of it's own, which resulted in a break up. A few weeks later Ben began playing with Big Metal Rooster on a regular basis. The band had found the missing link in their creative quest.
Out of this new burst of creativity came more prolific song writing on the part of Tom. "Trapeze," the band's first multi-part compositional piece was brought to life. Other songs like "Riverdog," "Sunlit Mirror," and "Mista Canista" would soon follow.
The band played a few very successful shows at Pat's Blue Rib'n Barbecue in Lawrence, Kansas and continues to perform around the state.
