First Listening
Local group keeps heavy metal going

In this job, I see a lot of pop/rock CDs,
a few R&B CDs and not much else.
This is generally due to the fact that these are
the dominant genres of today, with shows like
“TRL” dominating the music airwaves.
But, the other forms are alive and well;
they’re just a little harder to find.
A prime example of this is Rezinus,
a local group specializing in heavy metal.
While the days of metal’s dominance are
essentially over (thanks largely to Metallica’s unholy quest against Napster),
the art form based on heavy riffs, screeching
vocals and driving beats is still a potent musical
attack.
The group’s latest release, Woozy, is a definite
step in the re-establishment of the genre. Each
track on the album is a hard-rocking tribute to
the past gods of the genre that simultaneously
pays homage and forges a new sound for the future.
The opening chord of “Waiting” establishes the
mood as the relentlessly savage guitar of Dan Rohland
and the pounding bass of Greg Breeden interact to
create a tight, fused metallic sound. The strongest
quality of the band is their tight, interwoven parts
and this track proves it to you right away.
Other highlights are the contemplative (or as close to this as metal gets)
“Bad Luck is Luck” and the short and sweet final track
“No Love Lost.” The band really pulls together on every song,
though, with Tony Weaver and Breeden’s vocal blend
complementing Kai Ast’s drumming and the guitar parts perfectly.
It’s tough to pick a favorite when each piece is such
a complete effort from each member.
The only real problem I have with the disc is the
length. At a little over 28 minutes, it’s short for
a full release. But, the overall song quality more
than makes up for this flaw.
With the addition of a second guitarist, Chris Weaver,
and another CD in the works, Rezinus is one of the
most promising metal bands in the area.
If you get the chance to catch them when they’re
in Morgantown, make sure that you seize the opportunity.
You never know when metal might make a comeback.
