Artist History
In the beginning this band found itself, as many bands do, in a basement playing covers for the sake of making music. The thrill of this initial merry music-making, however humble, eventually found its way into the Ash Street Saloon one rainy Monday night in March of '99 for an "open mike." Patrons and crew of the Ash Street gave their enthusiastic approval along with a booking agent's name and number for a "real gig." And so it went. Continually developing original material, Say Uncle has played consistently around town thanks in part to the support of an eager burgeoning fan base. Venues such as Mt. Tabor Theatre, Ash Street Saloon, Cobalt Lounge, Berbatis' Pan and the White Eagle have been a welcome stage for the Say Uncle sound. Their music, rooted in the traditions of rock & roll and rhythm & blues, is heavily intertwined with strong vocals and sweet harmonies that make you pay attention.

Press Reviews
Willamette Week, April 25, 2001 - Portland band Say Uncle's debut album moves in and out of a sweeping, electric country-rock sound that seems straight outta Lone Justice's mid-80s albums, alternating with an incongruous bluesy approach recalling some of Tracy Nelson's legendary work with Mother Earth. But whoa--I'm not saying lead singer Teisha Helgerson is yet a rival for Nelson or Maria McKee, not yet. Rather, she and her band sound like they could have something special here, once they figure out just what it is.***

Posted April 28, 2001 - Say Uncle's CD release party was simply the hottest show in town last night. The music was tight, the band was hopping, and the dance floor was lead by the sinful voice of Teisha Helgerson whose rhythm alone can call your spirit to dance. Watch out Portland, watch our world, cause that voice can sing your soul to heaven and back. For those of you who missed the show last night you won't have to worry because they put the world on notice that they're serious about this thing called music. Say Uncle is here to stay, and Teisha Helgerson seems to have this magical gift called her voice to share with the rest of the world. So join me now and Say Uncle!***

Posted April 29, 2001 - With their first CD release party, Say Uncle has reserved a place as one of Portland's great new bands. Their lead vocalist Teisha Helgerson has a voice laced with rhythmic soul that blends the passion of a new diva with the grace of an angel. You don't need to be her mother to love this voice! One request, throw Maria McKee's "Breathe" into your set and I'd be in heaven. |
