Artist History
Larry Brian Binns and Marcia Lynne Epps met at
a summer music institute held at A&T State University
in June 1968 when they were 14 and 15 years old.
Larry fell madly in love with Marcia during that
summer and wrote to her shortly after returning home.
She quickly responded to his eighteen page letter
informing him that she would be leaving her home
in Ahoskie, N.C. and was coming to his hometown
in Winston-Salem, NC to attend the North Carolina
School of the Arts (NCSA) as an operatic voice major.
This was made possible after a successful audition that
was spear-headed by the recommendation of the former
Governor of North Carolina, the honorable Dan Moore,
who after hearing her sing was impressed with her
vocal abilities. She attended NCSA for four years
and was a student of Alice Howland, a voice instructor
at the Julliard School of Music. Larry and Marcia dated
from August through November 1968. After ending their
courtship they remained very close friends and confidants.
Larry was taught the rudiments and fundamentals of
composition and orchestration from his band director at
Anderson High, Mr. Robert L. Hunt. In 1970, as a rising
high school senior, Larry was invited to attend NCSA
as a classical music composition student of composer
Dr. Louis A. Mennini, dean of the school of music at
NCSA and older brother of famed composer, Peter Mennin.
After graduation from the high school division they
were both invited to continue their music studies at
NCSA as undergraduate students in the college division.
Larry was privileged at this time to become a
composition student of the President of NCSA,
Pulitzer Prize winning composer Robert Ward.
Additionally, during his studies at NCSA he
was privileged to attend master classes with
composers Aaron Copland and jazz pianist/composer
John Williams. Also, he was able to attend seminars
and master classes at Hampton University during the
summer of 1970 with trumpeter/composer Freddie Hubbard.
After nearly a year engagement commencing in October
1971, Larry and Marcia left NCSA to get married on
July 1, 1972. They have been blissfully married for
nearly 30 years, producing four beautiful daughters
who are all musicians. They continue their collaboration
in music and love as the founding members of "Passive Echoes". |
