Artist History
Singer/songwriter Dana Monteith, armed with his gibson acoustic guitar, is an amalgamator of raw roots energy , combining the best of rock, country, folk, and funk to create his own blend of Americana. His signature live creation, “Truck stop love ballads” was well received throughout New York and promises great things to come. He has shared the stage with many well-known artists such as Hamell on Trial and Steve Forbert.
Dana began his music career as founder of the cult jam band Ominous Seapods, who toured nationally for ten years. He is currently working on his first solo CD “Afterglow” which is due to be released later in 2003.
The Interview:
Monty Roberts: How would you describe the material you are currently writing and performing?
Dana Monteith: “It’s the late night taste of coffee and soul, and the wonderful overtired high of driving into the sunrise”
MR: The singer/songwriter route is quite a different path than you were on before. What is it that inspired this change of gears?
DM: “I really wanted to do something different. For ten years I did the improvisational rock band thing and I was feeling a desire for a more raw visceral level of songwriting and performance. The acoustic direction is the about as raw as it gets. You, your guitar, your voice and your lyrics, its all right there laid bare for everyone to see. I like to flexibility of acoustic music, it’s hit and run thing.
MR: Who are some of your current influences?
DM: It is ever changing. Over the last six months I’ve been listening to Richard Thompson, Lucinda Williams, Hamell on Trial, Leo Kottke, Ammie Mann, Gram Parsons, and whatever I can catch on the satellite dish.
MR: So what can the audience expect from your upcoming cd and what might they see at one of your live performances?
DM: The CD will showcase 10 songs running the gamet of the ‘trucktop love ballad” genre. Many of these songs will feature a band, comprised of some of the Capital District’s finest musicians, providing the listener will a multi-layered audio experience. Some songs will be solo acoustic. It will be a very dynamic work. The live show will be raw, in the moment and on the fly, vocals and guitar bringing it all back home. |
