Press Reviews
The following press reviews were for our debut album 'Chances' back in 1999. More information on this album can be found at http://www.reelscreen.com/curby.html
"CURBY - CHANCES. Gently crafted pop songs with some neat keyboards that are promising rather than earth-moving, in an Eighties indie way. They've conquered their home town of Plymouth - Portsmouth is surely next to succumb to their charms. 3 stars." - MELODY MAKER, March 6 1999.
"No Curbing The Curby Quality - They may have only ever played a couple of live gigs, but melodic Plymouth pop foursome Curby have already proved they have plenty of quality material under their belts if their new album, Chances is anything to go by. Radio 1 taste-setter Steve Lamacq was so impressed that he included one of the tracks, Angelic, on his Late Night Session last week. Singer / Guitarist Matt Tiller said: 'After he played the track, we had a great response from people all over the country wanting to get hold of a copy of the album'......Chances consists of well constructed cheeky pop tunes, generally on the theme of attracting members of the opposite sex. The chorus of the title track for example runs: 'Never do anything unless it increases your chances...of pulling a woman!'. Matt said: 'A throwaway remark from a female friend, but a good starting point for a song' - or an album!" - Plymouth Evening Herald
"CURBY - Chances (Demo) - One month into 1999 and it's happened, the anti-Christ in the form of 911 is number one. Britpop has been savaged by Bratpop and the New Kids On The Block reunion tour is only a Zoe Ball plug away. There has to be hope somewhere, anywhere....but here in the Southwest, logic Mr Spock surely dictates otherwise. Not so because in the shape of the four piece Curby, salvation is literally around the corner. "Chances", their debut, will ease many purveyors of sound through these shallow times. The Smiths are remembered fondly, not only in song length but also with understated drums and faultless guitar lines. First song 'Angelic' is the pick of a consistently good offering, whilst early R.E.M and Longpigs shapes are thrown. Closing track, 'Popstars', even manages to throw in the much under used skill of whistling to good effect. Chances are Curby might be stars and hopefully Bratpop won't live past February" - Mark Wingett, Scene Magazine, Jan 1999
