A high energy barnyard stomp and country funk boogie jamboree originating in Flagstaff, AZ during 2001. The Bones play a blend of original and cover tunes that weave through a myriad of styles including bluegrass, rock, swing jazz, reggae, Americana, folk, country and latin. The Bones’ main musical influences have been David Grisman, Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead, Django Reinhardt, Stefan Grapelli, Peter Rowan, Waylon and Willie, Little Feat, Bob Marley and Johnny Cash. Group Members
Rand Anderson - Guitar, Vocals Rand has acted as chief songwriter of the Bones and his writings reflect his spheres of influence. As the youngest of seven kids, Rand got all the hand-me-down jeans and records of his older brothers and sisters. He learned to appreciate all ends of the spectrum. His first instrument was the drums at age 4, but he wasn't very good and soon his older brother broke them. Next up was the piano, but that didn’t last much longer. Finally, Rand got an electric guitar and never put it down. As the founding member of the Los Angeles based rock group, Freshly Baked (House of Blues Records), Rand wrote and produced 5 albums. Having played at national venues and festivals with the Baked, Rand has shared the stage with such diverse acts as Sublime, Jerry Garcia Band, Merl Saunders, Jazz Is Dead, Jimmy Cliff, Burning Spear, New Riders, David Grisman, Tony Rice, E.L.O., and Richie Havens. Rand has also produced and played on albums for such artists as Ramsay Midwood (Vanguard), 15 Mary Thompsons, Slackstring, Wookie, Bredren, The Chilltones, Shortbus, and Ben Taylor (Sony). Rand’s solos are as much jazz, blues and rock as they are bluegrass, often taking listeners to the far reaches of the galaxy, with the utmost of taste and tone. Aaron Tyler - Mandolin Aaron Tyler is the 1998 Arizona State Mandolin Champion. A Native of New York State, this mandolin powerhouse began playing music at age six. With many years of professional experience, both as a sought-after performer and recording session musician, Tyler has extensively toured the United Kingdom and the United States. He has shared concert and festival bills with the Nashville Bluegrass Band and guitar innovator Dan Crary and has opened the show for many of the world's best in bluegrass, jazz and rock, including Bela Fleck, The David Nelson Band, Sam Bush, Peter Rowan and the Rowan Brothers, Tim and Molly O'Brien and the O'Boys, and Laurie Lewis and Grant Street. He has been a founding member of some of Northern Arizona's most popular bands including Onus B. Johnson, Rye, Brad and the Plaid and Greensky Bluegrass. Tyler's adrenaline-charged mandolin style is well-known throughout Arizona venues. He now makes his home in Sedona. Wild Billy Kneebone - Bass Born in a hurricane, bassist Wild Billy Kneebone has been playing music professionally in Arizona and the Southwest since 1976. Musically, his main bass influences are Berry Oakley, Paul McCartney, Jack Cassidy, Phil Lesh, and Jaco Pastorius. Kneebone says, “I love playing with Smokin Bones because all of the musicians are awesome...and we can rock really hard one minute, and the next minute we're in a bluegrass breakdown or reggae groove, so it can be spontaneous and very exciting." In addition to adding his unique bass stylings to the 'Bones, he has produced albums for other bands, most recently with Pete Sears (Hot Tuna, Jefferson Starship) for Arizona folk/rockers Each Others' Legend. Eclectic, eccentric, and sometimes electric, Kneebone jams 110% at each Smokin Bones show. Andrew Lauher - Drums, Backing Vocals Andrew grew up as an Air Force brat. As the family moved from base to base, Andrew found stability in his drums. As the driving backbone for many a bar band, Andrew made it onto the National Scene with the N.Y. based band The In-Betweens. Since then, Andrew has laid the foundation for many of Northern Arizona’s diverse bands such as The Unidentified, The Gypsy Blues Band and Onus B. Johnson. In the process, Andrew has become a master of all styles, allowing the Bones to morph from a spicy island feel to pedal to the metal, high-energy jamgrass. Lauher's drums seal up this band’s rock sound, transforming a mostly acoustic group into a full-fledged rock and roll band. He also adds a soulful harmonic dimension to Rand's vocals as if he maintains extra-sensory powers. Kirk Burnett - Banjo A native of Cottonwood and Jerome, Kirk picked up the banjo at an early age. He played and played and soon developed his own approach and tunings, "only cuz I didn't know any better and no one said to stop." Nowadays, Burnett is a master of anything with strings (cello, violin, guitar, bass, and mandolin). He has played and recorded with many bands throughout Arizona and Colorado including, Onus B. Johnson, Big Jim and The Twins, Brad and the Plaid, and String Cheese Incident. Burnett’s virtuosity on the banjo rounds out the fast paced, booty shaking solos of the Bones. When Kirk is not playing with the band, he is most likely driving a boat through the Grand Canyon.
