Artist description
"The Spinouts are totally trad. Rock n' Roll – ground floor, the vanguard of LI's renewed interest in rockabilly. Along with the legendary Four on the Floor with Freddie Frogs, the Rebel Rockers and Rhythm Bound, The Spinouts are considered one of the hottest Long Island rockabilly bands playing the East Coast circuit. They combine all the ingredients that make rockabilly work: They know the history, they have the look, their musicianship is first-rate and, hell, they rehearse in a pizza shop. At Mulberry Street Pizzeria in Bay Shore, around 11 p.m., after closing, when the place smells more like Pine-Sol than tomato sauce and garlic, the guys transform the joint into a rehearsal studio. The Top 40 station is turned off, and rockabilly fills the air. At rehearsal, Ludovico plays snare with brushes, 40-year old Lou Yorey (who owns the pizzeria) sets up his mini Gorilla amp and plugs in his blue and gold Gretsch, and 34-year old Tony Palumbo, who just ate his way through Italy for two weeks, caresses his beat-up, upright bass with all the confidence of someone who's been playing for 20 years. His dad's a professional guitarist and the songwriter who wrote 'My Dearest Possession' for Connie Francis. 'I was born into this,' he explains. 'Once I started playing upright, there was no turning back. The upright gives the music character. A big, round, fat, percussive, rhythmic sound. Plus, it's so visual.' As rehearsal gets under way, Yorey picks up the bass. 'How do you slap this thing?' he asks, clumsily plucking away. 'Grab the strings with you fingertips,' Palumbo advises. Ludovico is hanging at the back bar, a cigarette dangling from his lip, a spare behind his ear. His wedding ring is hanging from a plumbers' chain around his neck. (All The Spinouts are married and have kids.) As the trio begins rehearsing with a swampy 'Red Hot and Real Gone,' Ludovico gyrates, rocks and swivels as he hiccups and growls through the rootsy rock gem. The guys have captured R&B's backbeat, country's jittery edge and boogie woogie's horniness. This rehearsal is a musical history lesson – the smoky, blues-edged 'Midnight Blue' and the stop-and-go rock frenzy of 'Bad Ass' are part of a collection of songs The Spinouts recorded for their upcoming CD Cruisin' at Night With The Spinouts. The album spans the panorama of American pop – blues, folk, rock and even a little jazz – with Ludovico often deconstructing the style by drumming off the beat and writing in minor chords. Despite it all, the guys are missing a beat if you go by musical time, detached from the age of Puff Daddy and Green Day. They've created their own community, one that pays ironic homage to the rebellion against the simpler life to which they now aspire. Their errant time machine brought them back, whole, and it sounds just as fresh as the day the music was invented. After rehearsal, Ludovico disappears. He's cooking a pizza for a 2 a.m. after-practice snack. Cruisin' is playing on the PA system. This is a perfect world. And this is the perfect soundtrack." -- Robbie Woliver, The Long Island Voice, July 1998 |

Press Reviews
CRUISIN' AT NIGHT, the latest release from THE SPINOUTS is full throttle rockabilly. From outta the starting gate to the checkered flag these cats prove to be full of hi-octane energy. I know that when I put THE SPINOUTS on in my car, the passengers wish that I had suicide doors. "CRUSIN'AT NIGHT" loaded with a dozen tracks is sure to either have your pistons blowin through your engine block, or pulled over by the cops by track six. Get the picture? Good. ---- Johnny Ells, Turnupspeed Magazine at: www.geocities.com/turnupspeedonline/home.html |
