Artist description
With over 900 gigs under his belt in the bars
across Southern California, Sleepy Eddie James
earned his nickname from a habit of performing
entire songs onstage with his eyes closed while
completely focused on bringing his love of the
blues alive. The audience feels the intensity,
as sweat pours down his contorted face, shoulders
hunch, and teeth snarl; all the while squeezing
every last note out of classic blues numbers from
Stevie Ray Vaughn, Freddie King or the Little
Charlie and the Nightcats.
Originally from the east coast, Sleepy Eddie
exploded on San Diego’s blues scene in 1993
with a high energy trio called Sidetracked.
The band opened the eyes and ears of blues lovers,
while performing four nights a week. In 1995, he
joined the Southern California based blues band
called the Boogiemen. For more than 6 years, the
Boogiemen performed at some of the finest blues
clubs in Southern California, including regular
performances at Croce’s Top Hat and the Gordon
Biersch Brewery. The Boogiemen were notorious for
their spirited stage shows and great blues music.
Helped by the forceful and expressive playing of
Sleepy Eddie, the Boogiemen made it to the finals
of the regional competition of the International
Blues Challenge in 2000 and 2001. In June 2001,
Sleepy Eddie shared the concert bill with the
likes of Robert Cray, Kenny Neal, and Joe Louis
Walker at the San Diego Blues Fest.

SLEEPY EDDIE JAMES & the CALIFORNIA KINGS
12 October / Tacos Bar/ Lausanne
**** 4/5 stars
"Sleepy" Eddie from San Diego USA roared out of
the gate with a flurry of high energy blues songs
that took the audience by storm. By the end of the
evening the crowd was calling for more, screaming
after every number. Mr. James was a madman on
stage, amazing the audience with his antics during
each song. The band mixed several original songs
into the sets that seemed to fit seamless into
the rest of the material. If it wasn't for a few
broken strings during Sleepy's wild solos behind
his back or with his teeth this show would have
been super. Outstanding Swiss players on the
stage with Smokey on drums and Big Cat on bass. |
