Artist description
Judith Owen is an exclamation point. Gifted, witty and Welsh, Judith combines the pounding piano sensitivity of Elton John and Ben Folds with a Pythonesque sense of humor. The great Richard Thompson, with whom she recently performed at L.A.'s Getty Museum, thinks of her this way: "Judith Owen stands out like a clean-shirted substitute on a muddy Welsh rugby field. She is one of the great talents of her generation, blessed with an expressive and distinctive voice, a fine talent for writing and a masterful style of piano accompaniment. Through it all, Judith's irrepressible personality shines through - it is this, combined with her musical intelligence, that makes her unique in a crowded profession."
Currently, Judith is recording her trio for an album due out in the Spring. Los Angeles fans can see her perform with her trio every Tuesday night at the Joint. At the moment, her band includes Sean Hurley (Vertical Horizon) on bass and Herman Matthews (Whitney Houston, Kenny Loggins) on drums. Judith holds court on vocals and keyboards, weaving an unusual blend of uptempo bounce, emotional devastation, and off kilter free association stage banter. According to Julia Fordham, "Imagine the classic writing of a Carol King, add a dash of Annie Lennox flair, wrap it up in a soul as big as Aretha's, add a unique bright and witty bow and you would have a rough picture of the many original and innate gifts of Judith Owen."
