    Artist description
John Temmerman is a performer (primarily tenor sax), bandleader, composer and music teacher based in the Chicago area. Initially eschewing music for a business career after stints in the University of Illinois Jazz Bands and at Berklee School of Music, he took up his instruments again in the early 90's. He then blossomed under the tutelage of Mark Colby at DePaul University. The result was steady progress leading to roles as a performer/leader in area festivals and nightclubs and as a private music teacher. In 1995 he released a warmly received initial recording, Jazz Obsession Music, featuring John with a drummerless trio of sax, guitar and drums. His latest recording, The Power of Two, shows expansion in many ways. He is joined by his regulars: stalwarts Rusty Jones, drums and Steven Hashimoto, bass along with young lion Neal Alger on guitar. Together they explore a wide musical range including mainstream jazz, fusion, funk and swing during a 67-minute voyage. John's direct, organized, yet expressive solos are a delight, as are those of his counterparts. Another highlight is the interaction between the extremely tight rhythm section. There are 12 cuts on this CD. Temmerman composed six; the remainder include the standards, All Blues and Nice and Easy, along with lesser known tunes recorded by the Crusaders, Tom Scott and the LA Express, Mark Colby and one tune, Costa Del Sol, from his son's Playstation game, Final Fantasy VII. This release has generated a warm reception and domestic and international airplay.

    Press Reviews
From jazzreview.com http://www.jazzreview.com/cdreview.cfm?ID=2282 Featured Artist: John Temmerman’s Jazz Obsession Quartet CD Title: The Power Of Two Year: 2001 Record Label: The JFT Group Style: Straight-Ahead / Classic Musicians: John Temmerman (tenor sax); Rusty Jones (drums); Steven Hashimoto (bass); Neal Alger (guitar). Review: It’s been about five years since John Temmerman sent me a copy of his first recording titled Jazz Obsession Music on cassette. That tape spent a lot of time in my car and became a happy part of many journeys. The tenor-man from Skokie, IL has now issued a new CD and it’s a gem. Following educational stints at Berklee, De Paul University and the University of Illinois, Temmerman left a promising business career and picked up his horns again in the early 90’s. John currently teaches clarinet and saxophone plus Jazz Theory & Performance to students at all skill levels. This unit has been together for several years and it shows. The band is very, very tight! The Power Of Two explores funk, fusion and mainstream jazz including several Temmerman originals including my personal favorite, the contemplative Plan B. The leader’s powerful tenor is enhanced by Neal Alger’s energetic and imaginative guitar work. Hashimoto and Jones sound as if they have been playing together forever. Just listen to them on Slick Color. Wonderful interaction! Visit the Jazz Obsession website for audio samples. You’ll enjoy this fine quartet. Tracks: All Blues (Miles Davis); Costa del Sol (Nobuo Uematsu); The Power Of Two (Temmerman); Slam Time (Temmerman); Whispering Pines (Wayne Henderson); Nice And Easy (Spence/Bergman/Keith); T.C.B. in E (Max Bennett); Plan B (Temmerman); Slick Color (Temmerman); When The Lights Go Out (Michael S. Lawrence); Secondary Ignorance (Temmerman); Come To The Table (Temmerman). Artist's Website: http://www.jazzobsession.com Reviewed by: Richard Bourcier
