Artist History
Diversity - Didn`t Spock say that the beauty of the universe is in its infinite diversity? Well, you just met the diverse musical girl. I`ve been singing over 300 cover tunes for the last 10 years. I can scream Janis and swoon Chris Issak, I sing Where Have All the Cowboys Gone better than Paula Cole, I`ve sung Patsy Cline in Black Leather, Ella Fitzgerald in blue jeans, and You Oughtta Know in an evening dress. I`ve got a Gumby voice and I`ll never be a singer/songwriter whose songs all sound the SAME. I love all the music, and my originals incorporate the grooves of my favorite songwriters of the last 70 years. I`ve got titanium corners on my square peg. I`ll never fit into the industry`s little round holes. Sure I'd like to trade in the 1983 T-Bird for something from the new millenium, but I can`t take the money with me when I go; but I can take my music. All I want is a great little legacy of song that will be around in 100 years. Humming Bitch Machine in shiny silver space boots; Green-Eyed Monster completely naked (global warming, you know.) What got me into music? Guys. I`m almost ashamed to admit it. I became a jazz lover because I fell in infatuation with sax prodigy Christopher Charles of Rio Americano High School. I didn`t even get kissed, but he gave me Sarah Vaughn, Charlie Parker, Richie Cole, Spyo Gyra, and so on. Probably a good deal in the end. College, Nursing Degree, move to Alaska. New guy, this one with a
Dan Fogelberg songbook, Joni Mitchell`s Court and Spark, and a guitar. I married guy number 2. I was dragged into bars to sing "just one song," and before I knew it, I was there 5 nights a week 9 pm until 3 am. I learned to relax my ramrod-straight nervous spine and cope with people falling into the microphone stand and slurred catcalls like "Give it to me, Baby! Give it to me!"
Being sober in bars gave me lots of creative material (and blackmail material) to work with. Sneaking originals into the set-list led to positive feedback, and work on an album began. Work continues at this very moment.
Paul (aka Guy #2) and I have been encouraged by our great Alaska fan base and success in songwriting contests like Alaska Public Radio Network's Song of the Year Contest. In 2000, we won the Best Pop-Rock Song of the Year with "Rollin' With the Devil." In 1998, we were a runner-up in the same catagory with "The Wind Through Kansas." So, as long as the muse keeps hovering over me, I'll be "Givin' it to you, Baby!"
