Artist History
It all started back in '99 when Ryan Hopkins and Kyle Corsetti decided to teach themselves how to play instruments. They chose bass and guitar, respectively. Ryan idolized bassists like Les Claypool, Getty Lee and Flea and at the time, Kyle was into punk and grunge music. These highly influenced both their playing styles.
Then, in winter of 2000 Ryan invited Mike Gentile over to jam with Kyle and there was an instant connection. Mike was a music prodigy, having a knowledge of tons of scales and soloing speed to match, being influenced by guitar gods such as Eddie Van Halen and Jimmy Page. Shortly after, 'Pi' was recorded. Their first original creation.
Then, in the Summer of 2000 the first Mulletfest was put together. At the time, Dave Cabradilla and Daryl Wolfenden (who didn't play anything) were somehow in the band and they were called 'RyDaKyMi' then 'RyDaKyDaMi' then 'One Shaven Leg' (?). They played one song at Mulletfest, a cover of Headup by Deftones that featured Brian Buckley and Jon from (at the time) 30-od-6. Then in August of 2000, the original three jammed out with drummer, Scott Lynn, a long time friend of Kyle's and his heavy metal style completed and complimented the rest of the band. It wasn't long after that the band wanted to get serious and start writing some songs so Dave and Daryl became a roadies along with Bobo and the name became RiSK, taken from the first letters of the band members' names (except the lower case 'i' from Mike). This name didn't last too long especially since Daryl bought turntables and was back in the band. The name was changed one final time. They became Dipthong. This was appropriate because it may sound perverse at first but diphthong means 'complex vowel' roughly and the æ and others were often used in Old English. It was a cool name with a cool logo. The band was finally writing originals such as 'Urban Mockery' and 'The Dick Song'.
It was around the time of the second Mulletfest where a despute came about between Dave and Daryl. Houses were broken into, swords thrown through doors, piss poured in cars. It came to the point where (because Mulletfest was to be held at Dave's house) Daryl decided to tell people that Mulletfest was cancelled. The word spread and Mulletfest was a failure. Dipthong played the show as a four piece and have remained so ever since.
Since then, Dipthong has experimented with all different styles of rock music from hardcore to punk to rap rock, varying their sound extensively. They have played a good amount of shows, established a decent fan base, and sold over 300 copies of their debut 3-song, self-titled demo. |
