COUNTERSHAFT - "2K1" Without a doubt, this is one of best sounding, well-developed demo's that I've ever heard. This Virginia four piece calls themselves a "heavy thinker's heavy band". That suits them very well, as they combine a number of well thought out ideas into three deceptively heavy songs. There is a definite post-industrial vibe, especially in the machine-like vocals and dark brooding bass. The metal edge comes from the drumming, which is rock solid and incredibly heavy, and the guitars that alternate between throwing down thick power chords and quirky colorations. The originality here makes it extremely difficult to compare them to other bands sound-wise, but there seems to be as much Prong as Sabbath and a tiny bit of Tool atmosphere as well. A promising debut and a tantalizing tease. drew COUNTERSHAFT - "2k1" MCD '01 (Private, US) - This is a 3-song taster here from the band that opened the recent DOOMSDAY festival in Towson Md and who feature Greg Turley- the nephew of doom legend Victor Griffin-on guitar. COUNTERSHAFT employ a sound on these 3 cuts that combine a doom edge with a slightly more modern feel, a vibe that was further exemplified by their set at DOOMSDAY where, naturally, a wider selection of material was on offer. Especially good here is the final song, "Sorrow Train," which really has a nice dark, heavy feel. I'd like to hear a full-length disc by COUNTERSHAFT, as this MCD gives me hope for another cool local band that could end up much more, should they play their cards right. Raw Stonerdoom--as the great Solace or Electric Wizard produce as well--lots of feeling, a hot, sweaty, passion-filled atmosphere and driving grooves give the compositions of the band around the nephew of ex-Pentagram legend Victor Griffin its soul and fire. This band shreds, brutally and without mercy, while proving its sense for reasonable songs and not drifting into pointless alternative noise
