"BALD DAISY
Convalesce / Seasonal Mood Affective Disorder / Jupiter Fly / Dad And The Weatherman / …Only 29 Days 'Till / Sirensong / The Bone Church,
Coming on like a mutant hybrid between The Cocteau Twins, Garbage and Mogwai, this 7 track CD from US band Bald Daisy is a classy debut release.
While they mix the electro pop beats of Garbage with the otherworldly vocal delivery of The Cocteau Twins and the musical landscapes of post-rock bands like Mogwai, Bald Daisy have etched out a sound unique and engaging enough to call their own. The closest comparison would probably be underrated and now defunct US band Medicine - but with added beats.
Convalesce, opens the album, and is all fuzzed up guitar sounds, beats and enigmatic vocals. The vocals are delivered in an almost undecipherable style, much like the works of The Cocteau Twins or Sigur Ros, but repeated listening reveals hidden depth and intelligence.
Second song, Seasonal Mood Affective Disorder, is the strongest track on offer, sublime opening guitar play and haunting vocals give way to bursts of distortion, while all the time keeping a certain ethereal quality that permeates the whole song.
Jupiter Fly, opens with a lengthy collision between electro beats and chanting before deftly morphing into a mix between Nine Inch Nails and Lush, with heavy guitar assaults perfectly complemented by the sweet sounding but dark vocals.
Guitars are cranked up even further on final track, The Bone Church, overdriven and in your face, they rip from the speakers with real intensity and intent, all the while backed up by the ever impressive vocals that never put a foot wrong.
Bald Daisy create a great sound, reminiscent of a lot of late 80's and early 90's 4AD bands, but with their own twist and all shot through with a dark gothic streak and ethereal beauty. The vocals really stand out as impressive and deliver a sweetness and light style with undercurrents of dark menace.
This is a really impressive debut release that leaves you wondering -what comes next?"-review by Mike Bond From UKMUSICSEARCH.CO.UK
