Artist History
In February 1999 after coming from the Philippines to bury my mother.
I was not getting a lot of sleep. One night I got out
of bed an hour past midnight. I had words in my head inspired
by news on TV regarding then Pres. Estrada of the Philippines.
It said of a plan to amend the Constitution of the Philippines.
Also about a group led by Former President Corazon Aquino and
Cardinal Sin to oppose such a move.
So I went out of our
room into the staircase and wrote down the lyrics on a notebook that
I always carried. Later on I transferred it to my dayrunner.
In November of that year I got transferred to Diego Garcia. There I met
a Manila band member who is a singer composer. I showed him
the verse. He said that I have a knack for telling a story. Then
he said that he will put music to the lyrics.
A week later I went home to Washington for vacation this was in March 2000. While home my wife's cousin
gave me an acoustic electric guitar. I brought the guitar back
to Diego Garcia.
The whole time continued to write verses, whether
I was on a plane or waiting in the airport.
By May of 2000, I have not heard from my friend regarding the song. So one night I
decided to put music to my verses myself. I started with the lyrics
I gave to my friend. Then followed up with several more songs. Including
a song that I wrote for my wife. Which I sang on the phone into the answering
machine one night when I called and she was at work.
The following month a new Manila band was on island. They played rock and pop standards
meaning not Top 40 and dance music. I asked them if I could sing
my song during one of their sets. Since by that point we were friends. And
they have a part in their last set to invite a member of the audience to
participate. They agreed to my request.
I have not stopped singing my songs ever since. |
