Eminent Spirit REVIEW FROM KATHY PARSONS - SOLO PIANO PUBLICATIONS (www.musicmediagroup.com) "Reflections" - Clayton Wright (1998 Audiosphere Music) "This debut CD by Clayton Wright is an enjoyable mixed bag of easy-listening, smooth jazz piano solos. Quite a few of the selections have the sound of century-old light classical pieces, so I can't comfortably call this newage piano (whatever that is!). "The Ultimate Atmosphere", Image of Rain", and Nightfall are moody and seem a bit more new-agy, but the other pieces are more old-fashioned. The twenty-one original pieces are mostly shorter than three minutes, and range from simple little melodies to gentle stride and ragtime stylings. Although there is a broad range of styles, the CD as a whole is quiet and peaceful. There are no pianistic pyrotechniques, but there is nothing wrong with that! "A Night on the Town" and "My Love for You" could have easily come from Scott Joplin or one of his colleagues who composed "classic ragtime", which was meant to be played as written rather than improvised or embellished with a lot of flash. Wright has included three simple and charming waltzes that also have a turn-of-the- century feel. Tango and Latin rhythm drive several more tracks, so there is a very eclectic feel to the CD as a whole. "Nightfall" is my favorite piece on this album - the left hand is a bit more complex here than on some of the other songs, and the melody is haunting. It's a very lovely piece! Kathy Parsons - Solo Piano Publications _________________________________________ Moondust Clayton Wright 2001/ Audiosphere Music Company 63 minutes "Moondust" is a solo piano CD made up of several tunes from last year’s "Jazz in the City" and new material. Wright’s compositions are nostalgic, gentle, and much of his work is in a ragtime or stride style. It could be called reminiscent of early jazz, as his music is mostly quite structured rather than improvised. Some of the tunes, such as "Anti-gravity", "Momentum", "Saturday Night", and "Dreamscape" can easily fit in the "smooth jazz" category. The music is very pleasant and soothing to listen to. There are no hard edges or surprises, so it would be a lovely backdrop for an afternoon with a good book or a snooze by a cozy fire. I am a big fan of ragtime music, and enjoy the quiet end of it, which this is. Ragtime and stride can both be very rollicking, and this CD is not. It is controlled and carefully played, as much classical music is. "Moondust" won’t get your pulse racing, but it is a very pleasurable collection.
