The Silenced – Remnants of Mortality
By: Scott@Zwarp
Remnants of Mortality is a merciless onslaught of black metal, complete with blood curdling vocals (ala Cradle of Filth), furious guitar, creepy keyboards, and pummeling drums. I also heard just a bit of the chaos and evil of Samhain, although this may not be an influence. The guitars are churning and the keyboards add just the right amount of eerie accent. This is certainly black metal, but I found it to have a heavier (read: crunchier) guitar sound. The amazing thing about it is that Pat McReynolds plays all of the instruments on the album!
“To be Forever” has some great time signature changes and a relentless attack. The song slams into a great churning guitar groove just after the 2:00 mark. “Ecstacy in Rapture” is a swirling maelstrom of evil with so many stops and starts that you’ll need to sit down to keep from hurling. The song’s addition of a Luciferian-sounding background vocal (like a 45 rpm record played at 33 rpm) is perfect.
“Ending the Pain” is another groove-driven demon with a taste of some searing McReynold’s guitar slashing at the beginning of the song. I like how the song’s first galloping section batters you, only to slip into a smooth keyboard swirl until the next mind-numbing time change. There’s even some piano on this one. The guy has really got this stuff down.
I loved the guitar sound on “Shadow Walls,” which alternates between a Sabbath-sounding crunch groove and a Danzig-style string bending verse. Again, the keyboards are used to great effect and really give the song a spine shivering quality. I felt a few cold shots myself.
The thing I like most about Remnants of Mortality is that it takes the raw evil of traditional black metal and adds a great guitar crunch to give the CD a truly crushing sound. It’s a fantastic combination.
