Artist History
Pagan Child happened/formed/congealed from a
project undertaken by singer Tony Tomkinson
and guitarist Andy Jongman namely
Gateway to Oblivion.
A local DJ (and former Demon bassist) Chris Ellis
had indicated a willingness to play material on
his radio show and so the pair decided to record
two new songs - specifically "Time To Take My Leave"
and "The World In Her Eyes" under the name of
Pagan Chase (Andy having had a dream about being
in a band with this name!). It wasn't until the
then Social Secretary at Keele (University)
suggested the name that Pagan Child came into
existence. The pair soon added keyboardist
Dave Stringer and, with access to Keele's
24-track recording studio, the band set about
writing and recording its first album
"Do We Really Have To Be So Obscure?"
In late 1985 the trio recruited bassist
Stewart 'Jock' Brough and drummer Pete Walton in
order to take the band on the road. The majority
of the second album (then titled "The Vision and
The Voice") had already been written and recorded
(along with a good deal of other stuff), so Pete
and Jock contributed little in those terms, appearing
on just two of the tracks that would make up the
subsequently re-titled (and re-ordered) second
album "The Alchemist". This line-up's first gig
was a private party at Keele University for a
21st birthday bash (Cuedda, whose bash it was,
being a friend of the band) but subsequent gigging
was rare - a Halloween Ball (again at Keele), a
shindig at an Afro-Caribbean arts centre (attended
by very few but which went down surprisingly OK)
and several spots at the Stage Door in Hanley
(Stoke-on-Trent).
During 1986/7 the band started work on its
third album, provisionally titled
"A Book Of Cautionary Tales" again using the
facilities at Keele. However, with only a
handful of tracks written the band decided to
move to London. With Tony having work commitments
to fulfil in Stoke for several months yet and
having already lost Pete (who chose not to make
the move south), Dave then left for the bright
lights of the holiday camps. Tony back in the
fold some 6 months later the band set about
finding a replacement drummer. After a brief
period of auditioning they chose Toby Cox. This
was to be the band's most productive period in
terms of performing live and much of the material
that would make it to the third, and to date final
, album - "Fable" was honed on stage.
Like its formation there has been no decisive end, more
a drifting away of personnel across the country.
Andy, Tony and Jock remain in regular
contact and have involved themselves in various
projects since.
