Artist History
It all started up in 97´ in a queue to the canteen on Märsta Gymnasium. Fredrik and Henrik met Johan and asked him if he could sing. “Of course not, said Johan”.
This was the beginning of DXTR. Fredrik and Henrik persuaded Johan to come and visit them when they would rehearse. Johan said yes. Ok, the deal was set. The constellation - Fredrik Kempe (Guitar), Henrik Asplund (Drums) and Carl-Johan Fougelclau (Bas) had played together for a couple of years but C-J didn’t like to sing so they were in need of a singer. The first rehearsal took place in the autumn - no need to say anything more. Johan kept trying to sing/scream and after awhile he understood that the band should sound better without him. The band, which during this period was called Overwhelm, made one song – Liberation.
Time went on and after a couple of months Fredrik decided to call Johan again and ask him if he would like to make another try. Johan said yes, again. The band went on rehearsing like never before in their studio, located at Sigtunaskolans Humanistiska Läroverk. The new name of the band was Royal Edition and the first concert was set at Valsta Youth Club. Before the concert the band decided to change their name again to Dust. After that a new member signed in – Guitarist Henrik Von Sivers, an intern from the Royal school.
With Henrik the sound changed and Dust started to develop to a pop/rock-band. New songs popped up and Royal Edition continued to play on Youth Clubs in the community.
In spring 99 a nationwide music-contest was arranged all over the country – Musik Direkt. Dexter won the first part of the competition in Sigtuna community. Sorry, forgot to mention, Dust changed their name to Dexter just before the competition. Anyway, Dexter front-figure and lead-singer, Johan covered the front-page of the local newspaper. The next part of the Musik Direkt-competition (quarterfinal) was held at Nalen in Stockholm. It went pretty well and the band carried out to the semi-final but missed the nationwide final in Gävle.
This was a breakthrough for Dexter and the spirit and joy made them work even harder. New songs were made, lyrics were improved, friends started to give them feedback, new concerts were held and an unofficial demo was recorded.
Everything looked good but in the summer, after all excitement, the spirit disappeared. The last concert with the former constellation was held in 25th of august 99´. After that Sivers and C-J left the band. C-J moved to Piteĺ and began studying classical music at Framnäs and Sivers decided to spend more time on school and other bands/projects.
Henrik, Fredrik and Johan were determined to carry on. Fredrik´s cousin Christoffer took C-J´s place and some months later Cloffe entered the stage. A new sound started to take form and Dexter continued their rehearsals at S:t Olof´s music-studio. New concerts were held at local pubs and a demo called “To lie, never fail and rock ´n roll” was recorded. A releaseparty at Bryggeriet in Märsta draw over 170 people.
The boys in the band had to get secret phone-numbers cause girls and angry boyfriends were calling them throughout the nights. In the summer of 2000 Henrik lost all his enthusiasm playing the drums and Christoffer moved to Östersund to play trumpet on a musician-school. Christoffer promised to return home as often as he could and a friend to Cloffe - Jesper, agreed to act stand-in. Henrik left the band and moved to Norrköping for a couple of months. A friend to Christoffer drummer-boy Patrik, accepted playing with Dexter.
At this time the band decided to start spelling Dexter in a new way – DXTR. This is in the beginning of the autumn 2000. But, a new problem came up. S:t Olof´s school-board decided to close their music-studio for non-students. Everyone who is involved in music knows how hard it is to find a studio for rehearsal in Stockholm. But after a couple of months DXTR found the place they were looking for – an old armoury in Johan´s hometown Rosersberg. This made life much easier for the band and life goes on…
