Artist History
Mankind Biography
1990-95
Performed at every provincial venue, establishing a hot reputation and developing a massive stage presence. Released, recorded, produced 6 singles and 2 underground albums to local acclaim. Also featured on several local access video shows. Making a name as a producer, supplying singles for many regional artists as well as spearheading the “madhouse movement,” a society of musicians dedicated to making a better lifestyle for struggling, aspiring musical artists.
1996-99
After a legendary performance at Junetenth ‘96’, he hooked up with local bad-ass rap group “Mad lad” and negotiated a demo release with R.O.I Inc., an independent Arizona label. While becoming a proficient studio engineer, he recorded and regionally released “Help Save Mankind” it was immediately a success locally and followed by countless radio appearances and touring. He was beginning to gain respect as a headliner on stage as well as in the studio. So he took it back to the lab and made major contributions to projects and artists such as: MadLad, Mara Finch, Skdk/Rise1, Chimu, etc. and managed to bless an R.O.I. Inc. album “The Union” with an underground classic “No Competition” forging strong bonds with his business partners.
2000-02
Blasting into the new millennium with a new band, a new record and a new look with a whole new sound, Mankind’s diverse high energy stage show and a rapidly growing fan base, have gone international. His technological dedication lands him a title “Director of multimedia for R.O.I Inc. He released two hit singles, ”Terminally Pretty” and “Love Rears Its Ugly Head” for another R.O.I. compilation, ”Family Ties”. All the while starring in 3 independent student filmmaker projects for the University of Arizona, “the artist lament’, “Love rears its ugly Head” and “Rawkus Rooster”. He also has published two poems titled “Chris” and “Unknown” as Gabriel Barreda @ poetry.com. Mankind is currently recording his third and fourth consecutive albums and is exec and co-producing full length L.P.’s for “Fun Yung Moon,” “O.M.G”, “Sinista” and “D.J. Hazardous.”
Spending about 15 years on the drawing board as a dominant artist/poet/actor, all the while making a damn fine mark in the chapter of Hip Hop, in the book of music, this is his life.
Mankind brings originality and charisma to a new level with cunning linguistics and a timeless presence, capable of reaching out to a progressive society as a staple in this neo-cultural nation.
He has been described as “diverse”, “inspiring”, and “a progressive experimentalist”, Boldly tuning and fusing natural musical elements and giving them life of their own. The essence that Mankind has faithfully purveyed to his audience, is a style that is all his own. After all there really is no one good way to describe Mankind. You just have to experience him for yourself.
The strong funk influence is what keeps everything together, but it is the original blends that will make it last forever. Traces of classical symphonies and indigenous jungle drums haunted Mankind’s debut to the streets of Arizona. It wasn’t hard to tell that these new rhythms were not going away and the kid on the mic was not fuckin’ around. The C.D. was appropriately titled ‘Help save Mankind’. It brilliantly depicts a classic theme of struggle and love with revolutionary intent. “It was like something I never heard before, from somewhere I never thought to look, and I liked it”
Now there’s a new “live’ L.P., effectively labeled by critics as “slam/funk hip hop,” and described by fans as “genre shock therapy” & “Out of this fuckin’ universe!” It involves 6 new players and some serious elevation. It is easily one of the best recordings you will ever hear!
Mankind is a long-term community supporter, contributing to the preservation and advancement of music arts. He is actively involved in charities, benefits, and fundraisers for school sports, troubled youth groups, and shelters for battered woman and children. He is also active in community radio, cable access groups and contributes time to assist numerous local artists.
