Artist description
"Girls."
This is the blunt answer you'll get when you ask what got Will Cheshier into music. "I figured that girls liked rock stars so I should be a rock star. It never worked though. I made the critical mistake of getting so wrapped up in the power and beauty of music that I forgot to work on my hair."
While on the "wrong path," Will buried himself in everything from rock, pop, jazz and fusion to world and metal. "I have always thrived on contradictions and I love to make disparate sounds work together in a new, exciting way." Throughout his teens and twenties, he used these influences in an eclectic chain of bands. They included progressive rock (Sign of Life), brit pop (Up Ten Yen), acid jazz (Headz) and jazz-influenced pop (Big Drunk Dummy) as well as top 40, funk and other combos. He has played shows with an equally diverse group of artists including Styx, Pat Benatar, Tony McAlpine and The Greyboy Allstars.
As if to prove his dedication to unlikely combinations, you'll find his conversation to range from introspective to outspokenly opinionated and from dead serious to completely goofy. Somehow they all seem at home together when they come out of Will's mouth.
Now establishing himself as a solo artist, Will uses his strong voice and guitar skills to shape a unique blend of pop, jazz, funk and blues that is lyrically witty and musically addictive. And there's something for everyone, from the picturesque stories to funky rhythms and riveting melodies.
Will, like his music, is a study in contrasts who continues to tie everything up into a complete little package. Even girls like it. Well, the music anyway. |
