Artist description
Keith Welsh started playing shows around Central Florida in 1996. Equipped with simply an acoustic guitar he quickly distinguished himself through a bared heart and honest, sweet songs paired with an oftentimes abrasive demeanor. Roots in the hardcore scene found him opening for a diverse grouping of bands, ranging from The Van Pelt, Joan of Arc, and Retsin to Bleed, Damad, and Asshole Parade. Tours explored the south- and north-east, once alone and once with hardcore compatriots As Friends Rust. The crossover appeal was amusing in its success, but successful nonetheless. A heart shared is a common bond.
A few singles and an album follow, each showing continued growth. Listening to older recordings now invokes the bemused comment “What was I yelling about?” About a year was spent experimenting with the more traditional band approach in Tiger Mouth with members of As Friends Rust and Discount. Tiger Mouth disbanded in October of 2000 in favor of the approach Keith was most comfortable with: his voice and a guitar.
Which brings us to these nine songs. Keith recorded these in the summer of 2001 at Mirror Image studios, and in his apartment. It’s a new beginning, an attempt to get something new out and communicate with the world again. |

Press Reviews
It has been such a long time since Keith Welsh officially released anything. Slow Dive was and remains to be one of my favorite LPs of all time, so needless to say I am awfully excited to see his newest album American hit my doorstep. It isn't often that one person can create much of a stir of emotion in all of us by using simple ideals of love that go around inside all of us. Just like when you get another one of those redundant e-mail reply surveys to send all your friends and they ask what is the first song you'de put on a mix tape for a crush or the best song to make out too. For me it's been easy: Keith Welsh "Hurt's To Breath." The first time I heard it, my boyfriend had included it for that purpose, and I literally started to cry.
So now we have a new and rather short LP, but even the artwork reflects some changes. All nine tracks included set you up for a nice attempt at winning me over. Keith Welsh has always of course been a master of lyrics and stood as one of a few acoustic performers who neglect to be boring or distasteful. He doesn't fit right in a coffee house or a lounge or classy casino. He's sometimes accompanied by drums, piano, or synthesizer, but there's always an acoustic guitar and harmonica. Not as an older folk singer or complaining teen but a great guitarist with a great voice and wonderful knack for songwriting.
The production on this release seems a bit better then his last as well as the mixing and all of the fun intertwined in recording. His voice seems a little deeper or more applied but still a good part of his charm. There is also a good amount of cheerful melodies to go with the weary softer songs of despair that, if listened more carefully, are genuinely appreciation confessions. I always find it nice when an artist is capable of two extremes and can let lose and have fun doing so.
The first song "Turn in Your Books" is a happy tale thick with harmonica and clean strums. A very good choice as an opener because it leads right into "Where My Belly Hangs," one of the best tracks. Boy's, if you want to impress your girlfriends, write them songs like this. It is a beautiful example of acoustic simplicity blooming into melodic song writing skill. It's much like a warm light, one you want to shine on you like a song you want to be about you.
This LP is full of happiness, love, and heart. It would be impossible to point out any insincerity here. I can't make any suggestion to improve other than maybe to incorporate less haunting emotion in the pianoed songs, but that is a matter of personal taste. It has a very deep feeling of honesty and contains no songs that do not have a character and a story to tell all its own. I dare you to find a better song than "5:35 am" to hit your ear this year. With a full access website coming shortly and a discography compilation on its way, Keith Welsh is moving right along, and deservingly. --Delusions Of Adequacy
