Press Reviews
EXPOSE(issue No.23 Dec 2001)Peter Thelan writes
"The dark, pensive and alienating soundscapes that comprise the 14 compositions herein could be the soundtracks for nightmares or dreams of disconnection. Code One is the collaboration of avant-garde vocalist Cindy Lubar Bishop and composer Peter Girard. Fourteen Parts is first and foremost a product of the studio, using electronics, vocals, sampling, special effects and treatments, and clever productions techniques. Little here bears much resemblance to 12 tone western music; or eastern music, or any other music for that matter....this is visionary sonic art collage and experimentation. Some reference points might be ambient composers like vidnaObmana, pioneering experimental visionaries like John Cage, and vocalists like Mexico's Alquimia. Some passages feature spoken parts while multi-tracked vocal sounds swirl and echo in the background, and other samples and "found" sounds might be collected and arranged into rudimentary rhythms. Other passages feature melodic vocals, sometimes multi-tracked and heavily treated for that "alien" feeling or haunting effect. There are no hard edges or abrasiveelements here, its just very unusual and strange in a passive floating ambient sort of way. One listen leads to another, then anther, and eventually it doesn't sound so strange after all.Recommended for the intrepid sonic explorers. File under Out There!!" |
