Artist description
In an industry where the pop airways are saturated with watered down man-rock
and pure entertainment-driven groups and divas, for the unaffected listener a
musical hunger arises. As put by a fan at a Fitzgerald's show where Modulator performed after The Donnas, such an appetite can be satiated by “music that makes you feel thinner and better dressed."
Modulator by definition is a pop band that collages sounds of analog keyboards, guitars, and two female vocalists. Its sound, being alien to Houston audiences, has been described at ear flash as reminiscent of Lush, the Rentals, and even Blondie.
Singer/songwriter Julie Omran describes Modulator’s unique approach. "This is a carefully crafted band in terms of its sound. We felt like it would be interesting to take inspiration from each of the members’ diverse music backgrounds and with it create a very unique and fun thing. We are different from many groups out there today – we want to entertain the people with pop songs that they can really sink their teeth into.”
Jeffrey Thames of 90.1 FM KPFT’s popular show Sound Awake recalls, "One of the local groups spun on the very first Sound Awake was the ultra-cool drone-rock outfit,
Grey. As luck would have it, they split up not long after, but a few ex-members
have found a new, sunnier home in Modulator. The chorus pedals have given way to
analog synths, and sleek cocktail pop is the order of the day. "The One That Got
Away", the group’s debut mp3, might very well be the saddest up-tempo song in a
major key on record."
Since the release of its single, Modulator has recorded its debut EP (released in October of 2001) and has not been afraid to take its movement to the indie/hard rock venues of Houston. The self-titled four song EP has been slowly circulating in nightclubs and local record stores in town by word of mouth. The band is proud of its first recorded effort. The band’s bassist, Alistair, puts forward "I believe people will be pleasantly surprised after listening to our CD, especially once they find out that it was recorded and engineered by the band at the modulator house on Julie’s PC. I think our songwriting and sound will really stand out above the crowd."
