Artist description
The Keys of Knowledge have brought back the
lost art of creativity. Two individuals representing Night
and Day, Man and Woman. The duo is made up of the Black
Knight and LAH, (Love and Heartache).
LAH, a sista that generates a sexiness that stops all of
the male species in their tracks. Then as the words start
to pour from her mouth a magical libation starts to fill
an empty vessel in the audience's soul that forces them
to give up what all women crave and deserve....respect!
The Black Knight, the name speaks for itself. This handsome
dread is the Nubian Knight in Shinning Armo,
his voice caresses and comforts the women in the audience
with a power and confidence.
Together the Keys of Knowledge experience
is phenomenal! The lyrics forces one to think. With great
ease they form stories that take the listener on a wild,
sometimes sensual, and even tearful journey that touches
home with all in this universe. Accompanied by an array
of mesmerizing music painstakingly created to fit each verse,
the Keys of Knowledge have broken down old barriers and
have reated their own niche....Alternative R&B. The
new wave in music.

An Evening of Class
October 4th 2001 a cool fall evening in the
nations Capital. The citizens have all reached their destinations
and are ready for some well deserved rest from the long
work day with their love ones. It's Thursday so most of
the citizens have tuned their radio dial to one of the Hottest
radio programs in the city. 95.5FM "Love Talk and Slow Jams"
Hosted by Justine Love & Todd B. These DJ's mix a relaxing
blend of Classic and New School slow jams that are sure
to put anyone in the mood for some serious romance or soothing
nights sleep. This night is not like any ordinary night.
Tonight is the "Poetry Cafe" where people can call in and
express themselves in verse on the air. What even makes
this night just that better, is the fact that they have
as their guess the Premier Alternative R&B group Northside's
"The Keys of Knowledge".
The Evening started with the Keys LAH performing
a piece titled "The First Time Ever I". Inspired by a Roberta
Flack Song. It is about LAH expressing her feelings about
the first time she saw, touched, kissed, and many other
first times with the person of her affection. This just
seemed to set the tone for the whole evening as her sultry
voice poured through the airways and lit up the phone lines.
Even Mr.. Todd B had to admit he was hypnotized by the way
she recited her verse. After a few jams and a guess caller(poet)the
attention was on The Black Knight. He decides to bless the
people of Washington with a piece called "Spring Cleaning".
This was about his love interest leaving him and his coping
with the lost. The Black knight's legacy still lives on
in DC's Poetry Circuit, as one caller calls in to say hello
and congratulations on a great CD representing the art form.
On into the night the the Keys of Knowledge
did two more pieces. LAH with the city's favorite "Pusherman".
A steamy verse about a woman's lust for her man who she
dub's as the pusherman. LAH seems to be the loud voice for
women, as she touches on topics that are normally kept secret.
Black Knight's next presentation was played on the air.
Called "Love of My Life" it was about abortion from the
father's perspective. Very thought provoking and can be
even considered controversial. He is asks the woman why
she made her decision without his input. A rare look at
an African American Male who actually wants to be a father.
Not just "Baby's Daddy", but a responsible parent. The Vocals
were quite clear over a very laid back R&B track. Once again
this stimulated the phones to light up. The Keys had definitely
made a mark this evening.

Something New at Karibu
It's Monday morning and I am writing about
an event that happened on Friday. This is normal because
I usually do things at the last minute. Sometimes I can't
even remember what happened on Friday due to the events
of Saturday and Sunday. But for some strange reason, the
events on Friday really stick out in my mind.
It was a normal day, I really can't say I
wanted to be at work but that's what makes it normal, and
due to the fact that I don't like to get up in the morning
I came in late. This means I was one of the few people left
in the office around four o'clock and I was looking for
an early way out, don't laugh because you do the same thing.
On the board for today there were several events that were
to take place for Friday and only one was not taken, a performance
by the "Keys of Knowledge" at Karibu Books in PG
Plaza.
I had no idea what to expect because usually
the shows that are left on the board are the ones that nobody
wants to attend. So here is the choice, go see the Keys
perform or stay in the office and do some real work. Time
was short because my man Spoon had just walked in and his
first mission on every Friday is to get out of the office.
Out of the office or stay in and work - out or in - out
or in - out or in - OK I'M OUTTA HERE. I Ripped the venue
off the board, turned my computer off, walked pass "The
Spoon Man's" desk and flipped him the FING*&^(^ I mean the
thumbs up sign and got to stepping.
Arriving at Karibu Books was no easy task
because of traffic and two or three of our good old "Senior
Citizens", but I got there. There was a little buzz going
on in the hall so I knew right were to go, plus there was
a dude standing in the hallway telling everyone to come
see the Keys perform their new CD called Flowetry.
Now it is just dawning on me that I am unaware of the type
of music I am going to be hearing so my first task will
be to cop a CD and see what type of music they do. Being
part of the press has its privileges so I got out my press
card and dove in headfirst. With my press card hanging from
my neck I asked, "Where can I purchase a CD", to the young
man that I was standing by. "It depends on what CD you want"
he said. "If you want to buy a Keys CD you can get it over
there, but anything else you will have to go across the
hall and they will fix you up". Not amused with the young
wiper snapper I ask for his name. "Tenchi", he said, "Northside
Records Intern, Peace and Blessings". Turns out he was just
pulling my leg; he knew that I was from the press and already
had a CD waiting for me.
Ready for the Keys to start their performance,
I perused the CD looking at the Quality workmanship that
you don't usually get with Independent Labels. It had a
beautiful cover with a stylish looking key on the actual
CD. Well, what happened next was the joy of the night. As
the group, consisting of LAH (Love and Heartache) and the
Black Knight, stood in front of the crowd there was an air
of anticipation looming over them. This is what the people
came to see and I was ready.
The first song performed was Nerve
by LAH. The music alone could have impressed me enough to
buy a CD, but when she started to put the lyrics down -
oh boy oh boy. This was something that I had never heard
of before. I mean Jill Scott did a little bit of this type
of music on her song entitled "Honey Molasses" but man LAH
was putting it down.
Second was the Black Knight's turn doing a
song off the CD called "Love of my Life". Now this
is a strong piece considering the content. This song comes
from an angle that is rarely heard. It's about a relationship
that goes threw turmoil due to an unfortunate event. I don't
want to give too much away but I will say that this piece
hits home like nothing has ever done before. Just between
you and I, I almost had to walk away. You definitely want
to check that one out; it's going to be a classic.
Now, last but not least the final songs of
the night. Although the performances had me riveted, I was
not looking forward to hearing this song too much because
of the title, "Pusherman", I don't want to hear about
some DRUGGIE. Ok, I am a professional and I can listen to
anything if I have to, I will just write about it later.
The song started and before I knew it the song was almost
over and I was picking my jaw off the floor. This wasn't
about some druggie and the Pusherman was not a dealer, well
not in the normal way. He was dealing something but it wasn't
drugs baby. This could have been the best performance that
I have ever seen if I had seen it all. I think the songs
content, coupled with LAH's gyrations sent me into a confusing
daze of wishful thinking. By the end of the song, I wanted
to be the "Pusherman".
When I started writing this piece on the
"Keys of Knowledge", I said how I though it was strange
that the events on Friday stuck out in my mind. I guess
after writing the story I can't really say that anymore
and I am sure you can figure out why. After I submit this
piece for print I am sure to get many people coming to me
to borrow the CD. A famous commercial comes to mind and
I will just quote that to them - "Hey man that is a fantastic
album, can I borrow it"? - "Nooooo my brother, you have
got to get your own".
