    Artist History
Keno was founded in the summer of 2000 by Andy Smith and Heath Ripplinger. They both started jamming together when they were wee lads in high school. After high school James Timmons started writing lyrics and melodies while Heath played beats to them (thats right, it was just vocals and drums). Eventually, they hooked up with Matt Fleener to round out their line up. Keno was born and they began to practice everyday in an old floral shop that Heaths mom owned. They scrounged up a few songs with a few bucks and headed to Wenatchee, WA to record. After their first demo, self-titled, was recorded they played show after show handing out their brand new masterpiece to anyone who would take it. 88.1 FM was kind enough to play a couple of their songs to help them gain exposure. After playing shows, and distributing their demo all over Washington they scraped together some more money and headed back to Wenatchee to record four more songs. Despite Andy moving to Seattle, more shows followed, but after a year Andy moved back to Grandview and Matt relocated to California; this is where things began to fall apart for KENO. Matts devotion was quickly dwindling, however, he still had enough to fly up for a couple shows and donate his talents for a third demo. This time the guys were approached by a recording studio in Olympia, Washington named Recording Lair. KENO recorded four more songs and had them professionally pressed at their own expense. This demo really defined the sound that they were trying to create. Since 2001, Keno had been in contact with Richard Reines of Drive-Thru Records, who was impressed with their demos enough to give them a small tour spot on his labels very own stage at The Vans Warped Tour. They were given the opportunity to play the northwest installment of the tour except for one small prior obligation; Andy was getting married in June which overlapped the tour dates. They eventually decided to play at the tour stop in Vancouver, Canada. The show went great and the guys got to hang out backstage and meet all the bands they looked up to, such as NOFX, MxPx, and all the Drive-Thru Bands. Warped Tour was a great experience for the band and helped them grow, however, Matt moved to California for good so KENO was left without a guitar player. Then the search for a new guitar player was on. At times KENO almost gave up and quit. Finally, Izaak Grundvig, from Richland, WA became KENOs new guitar player and picked up all the songs quickly. They wrote a few new songs with him and played some shows. Unfortunately, he thought he needed a job more than a band so once again KENO was left without a guitar player. A replacement came much quicker this time, because Kris Bennett of the band Absent Minded, volunteered to fill the empty spot. Kris was KENOs missing link. Through it all KENO has developed great music and a fantastic stage show. So thats where KENO stands today and heres a little breakdown of all the individual members: James Timmons: The lead vocalist of KENO usually tends to get the crowd going with his intense, energetic, and intimate presentation to the crowd. Known for having a very broad range and creating the best of melodies, KENOs front man displays talent through intensity and insanity. Andy Smith: The bass player of KENO adds in his share of intensity with his amazing bass lines and his reputation for going nuts when they play live. Andy has been playing for 8 years and displays his experience through shows. To sum it up, Andy is just flat out super with a side of duper. Heath Ripplinger: The drummer of KENO has fulfilled many fans with his terribly amazing drumming skills. Heath is extremely talented and one of the greatest drummers on this side of the Mississippi. Heath is endorsed with Orange County Drum and Percussion and is known for his insane rolls and fills. Above all, theres not much room for improvement in this phenom of the instrument. Kris Bennett: If two words could describe Kris they would be “bad ass.” Kris is the newest member of KENO and also their missing link. He adds to the front lines intensity with his incredible stage presence and flawless performance. Not to mention, he brings his own style which adds to the overall sound that KENO has declared original.
