Press Reviews
Pittsburgh City Paper on the cover page of A&E
August 8 - 15 , 2001. Reveiw written by Ernessa
Carter.And I quote "Maragritaville isn't the kind
of place you'd expect to find a reggae band every
Friday night.Located on the South Side , it's a
big place made small by bad design. There's one
room for performance, and most of it is taken up
by the bar that leaves little space for audience
members or a stage , since the one at the front
of the bar is little more than a window dais.
But Wizdom , considered by many to be among
Pittsburgh's best reggae bands, doesn't seem to
mind. With all five members and their various
instraments jammed up on the tiny stage they PUT
ON A SHOW , with lead singer Errol "Wizdom"
Williams bringing enough energy to fairly mute
the usual barroom chatter. Of course there are
the usual Bob Marley covers, and even an inspired
reggae remake of a Hall and Oats song, but it is
really the original stuff that makes this band.
With many in the crowd singing along with such
favorites as "Christine" from Wizdom's first
albulm,"Innocent Blood"(self-released), it is
clear that it is WIZDOM -and not just any reggae
cover band- that the audience has come to see.
Halfway through their Hall and Oats cover song ,
the power cuts out. The audience alarmed, the
bartenders stop what they're doing , but the band
doesn't miss a beat. "Zephania" Willacy keeps on
singing in the darkness without the benefit of a
microphone, accompanied by Mike "ThePrimeMinister"
Orme on drums. The band members who can't play their
electrical instraments dance and nod their heads
to the music and when the power is up again, they
come back in as if they never left. That's when
you get the feeling that no matter what they say,
music is really what's first on this band's list. |
