Artist History
Nicole Atkins is a 23 year-old singer/songwriter from Asbury Park, New Jersey. With a voice that has been described as "undenieably heartbreaking"* and a stylistic blend of blues, indie and southern rock n' roll, she brings us music that is defiantly beautiful. It's the kind of music that makes you remember.
Nicole started writing songs and performing them in the smoked filled juke joints of Western North Carolina. It was there she sang backup for the infamous Memphis Quick 50 as well as the 70's "chase" music band, Pollywog.
After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte she was eager to move back home to the Jersey shore and start playing New York City. She is a regular at the Fort, playing in the Lower East Side's Anti-folk scene. She has been playing relentlessly in New York City, New Jersey and Philadelphia, and whenever the chance comes up, Charlotte, NC.
In August 2001 she released a five song acoustic EP, "Those Damn Powerlines," with the help of Brazilian "spacerock" guitarist, Camilo Nascimento. In March she released her first "mini-album" titled, "Paperhouses." With the help of Rainy Day Lewis on guitar, Shawn Lynch on drums and Mark Lynch on bass, all members of the killer NC group, Les Dirt Clods, the album recieved amazing reviews and is currently in heavy rotation on WBJBFM 90.5 the Night.
This summer Nicole will be getting back together with the three Clods for some more recording. Yep, a brand new album. Full length this time. You can catch her live at least one or two days a week solo, sometimes with a drummer, sometimes a full band but no matter what the set up, it'll rock!
