Artist description
"Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream, really do come true."
The words from the famous song 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' are a testament to the life of Tammy Weis. While growing up in Northern Alberta, Tammy was always surrounded by music. Her grandparents organized and sang in church choirs, her great-grandfather played the banjo and her mother sang country songs. Tammy (named after famous country singer Tammy Wynette), was encouraged to sing by her mother and grandmother. Performing for guests soon evolved into singing in school festivals and winning talent contests. As she grew older Tammy lost sight of her talent, but when tragedy struck in 1994 with the death of her mother Tammy was faced with some serious soul-searching. While going through her mother's belongings, Tammy came across her songbook. As she went through the pages, Tammy realized her mother had dreamed of recording an album but, with domestic responsibilities, had never had the opportunity to follow that dream. Reality hit hard when she realized she had the opportunity but was not taking it. It was then, while listening to Sarah Vaughan's version of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' that she realized how truly special her mother's gift to her was. Her gift of music. For Tammy that was the moment when she resolved to use the gift to fulfill her mother's and, she realized, her own dream to record an album and to pursue a career in music.
In June 2000, after years of performing at venues around her present home of Vancouver, Tammy's dream has finally reached fruition. She released her debut album 'Legacy' which she has dedicated to her mother. Tammy's album features such Jazz legends as Bob Murphy, Miles Hill, Campbell Ryga and Graham Boyle. She has been the centre of media attention with the album's release. Tammy is featured on the cover of the June/July issue of Vancouver Lifestyles magazine. She has been interviewed on CBC-radio's 'Coastal Grooves' program, on 'Dal's Place' on AM600, and has made several television appearances including: CBC-TV's 'Broadcast One-State of The Arts', VTV's 'Vancouver Breakfast', and Roger's 'Daytime'. With the release of the CD in her hometown of Edmonton, Tammy was featured in the Edmonton Journal. Most recently Tammy has received airplay on the national CBC radio programs Ross Porter's 'After Hours' and Jurgen Gothe's 'Disc Drive'. She has graced the stages of Vancouver's best Jazz venues, has performed during the Vancouver and Montreal Jazz festivals and has worked tirelessly performing on the convention circuit. Her album 'Legacy' is available in stores across Canada. For Tammy, the dream she has dared to dream really has started to come true.

Musical Influences
I'm not sure when the passion for music began in my family but the legacy has been passed down from one to another of us....from my mother to me. It burns in my soul as it did in my mother's....to be translated through my voice to be shared with you.As the eldest child who bore the weight of my mother's passing on, it was with great responsibility that I felt I must continue the path leading to the fulfilment of her dreams. One of those dreams was to perform songs that she loved and to record them so her passion could be shared. While sorting through her belongings I came across her handwritten songbook of material that she had once performed. After looking through the songbook, I realized that her dream had actually begun on those very pages....to be brought to life through my voice. And along the journey it has become clear to me that this has become part of my own dream, inspired by my mother. She has supplied the choice of music and lyrics and I supply the styling and the voice. This is our gift to you. We hope you enjoy the album |
