Artist History
A Lengthy Biography to lay groundwork for the ride of a lifetime.
In late 1996, Jamie Durham (singer), Ross Broadway (drums), and Ryan Calmes (bass), and two guitarists from the area, emerged and loomed on the Toledo Music Scene like no group of kids have done before. What all started as five young adults in a garage, quickly changed.
"Fringe" (The local Toledo act) was given the opportunity to open shows for up and coming national acts, all signed by national recording companies, but not quite able to draw big enough crowds on their own (Drain S.T.H, and Porn Flakes). On all occasions, the response was overwhelming.
* Aug. 9, 1997, Fringe opens for Kid Rock, at The Asylum (Toledo,OH).
300 people attended the show. Kid Rock had been touring for 8 years, and had seen better crowds in Toledo before.
* Sept. 15, 1997, Fringe opens for Limp Bizkit, at Frankie’s InnerCity(Toledo,OH.) 252 people witnessed, thousands now wish they had.
* Nov. 4, 1997, Fringe’s favor (opening and supporting) to Limp Bizkit pays off at The Asylum (Toledo, OH)
Fringe played in front of 1500 people. This was the biggest show to hit Toledo, Ohio in 6 months. Taproot from Ann Arbor, MI. was in attendance, but did not play. Low-Dough show, Ladies no-cover! Many wondered when the band would be back to Toledo, much to their surprise, Fringe resides from Toledo.
* Dec. 1997 – Feb. 1998, Fringe sold out the small club The Underground (500), and even smaller Toledo favorite small club Frankie’s Inner-City (300).
With the bands success, the three had found their calling and began recording in four sessions at Action City Records (Texas, OH.). Fringe recorded four songs, but did not get the sound they had hoped for.
* May. 1, 1998, Fringe released a self-titled E.P. on their own and sold 700 copies at local stores and at shows. Copies began circulating in the offices of Major Labels, and calls began coming in from Universal Records, Roadrunner Records, Atlantic Records among others.
* May. 30, 1998, Fringe headlines an all local bill, at Main Event (Toledo,OH).
485 people pack into the club, a near sellout (500).
After packing small clubs and hosting bands such as Jimmies Chicken Shack, and Deicide rumors surfaced that Fringe had broken up.
The real story, two members of the band weren't up for the challenge.
"Fringe" had to replace both of the two guitarists; the search was on for replacements.
* Dec. 1998, Steve Langenderfer (aka "Derph"), drummer of a popular Toledo death metal/grindcore act "Osiris", began practicing with the band and fit like a glove.
* Feb. 1999, Fringe headlines another local only bill at Main Event (Toledo, OH)
* Mar. 1999, Fringe releases a second self-titled Demo, and sells 1000 copies at the shows and at local area stores. Again Record Companies respond, but nothing.
* Mar. 13, 1999, Fringe opens for Clutch, and Drown at the Main Event.
* June 1999, Fringe announced the addition of Bryan Blank lead guitar and the backbone of Osiris.
* Aug. 18 – 21, 1999, Fringe plays a set of 4 shows in the Carolina’s with a popular unsigned act SEV (now signed to Farmclub Records).
* Nov. 30, 1999, Fringe opens for Sevendust, Chevelle, and Dope at The Roxy (Toledo, OH). It is a near sell-out crowd (750).
* Dec. 1999 – March, 2000, Fringe continues to draw huge crowds in Toledo, and is beginning to reach out to Michigan opening for Factory 81, and Taproot, in both of the bands home markets.
* April 7, 2000, Fringe headlines a show at the Main Event in Toledo, with openers Taproot, One Minute Silence, and Relative Ash. The show is a huge success as it sold-out (600 people). During the production of the event
David Kirby (The Agency Group) needed to make up for an off day on the Creed, Sevendust tour and the promoter (Inner-citi Enterprises) arranges a Sevendust appearance for the next night. Fringe notifies the crowd of 600.
* April 8, 2000, Sevendust plays a last second show at MainEvent with openers U.P.O. and Fringe. This show again sold out!
* April 28 – 31, 2000, Fringe records four songs with Vince Merino, (vocalist from Osiris) as a special guest vocalist on a twelve track recorder in a friend’s basement studio in Richmond, VA.
* April 13, 2000, Fringe opens for Papa Roach, and Taproot at The Blind Pig (Ann Arbor, MI). Sold-out!
* June 3, 2000, Fringe headlines the Toledo Music Festival at Croakies/Main Event (Toledo, OH) 1,250 people were in attendance as Fringe plays on the outside stage just as the sun fell. 34 bands on 4 stages.
During 2001/2002 – Mindshift has opened for Systematic and performed on the main stage of the 2001 Toledo Music Festival (56 bands on 4 stages).
April 2001 – Mindshift records “Pins and Needles” demo at Action City Records.
September 2001 – Mindshift records a four song demo (featured in package) at 40oz Sound Studio in Ann Arbor, MI.
Till this day, Fringe has had a “mindshift”, and is in the studio, writing and recording new music!
With all the pieces in place, the band is poised to take over a lot more than Toledo. The loyal following of crazed fans has made these four guys work harder than ever. They simply smack you in the face with straight-up rock, and have you come back asking for |

MINDSHIFT
4 song demo
Light years away from their former incarnation as Fringe,
this year’s Mindshift model sports a heavy,
emotive modern rock sound with impressive vocals
and seriously catchy songs, bolstered by a solid, radio-ready production.
Fans of Sevendust, Deftones, Systematic (who I’m especially reminded of in the vocals),
or maybe even P.O.D.’s more melodic moments would love these songs. If I had a complaint,
it’d be that the songs kinda start to sound the same after two or three – over a whole album,
this could be a problem, but it’s not a big deal at this stage. The point is, Mindshift have definitely grown up,
even compared to the material I heard from them a year ago. SONG #4 is the most impressive of the bunch, but
there’s not a bad tune here – Mindshift is on the verge of something quite big here. [www.mindshiftmusic.com] Keith Bergman
