Artist History
Aether are a Glasgow-based rock band, formed towards the end of December 2000. They play a mixture of crunching rock songs, emotional soulful ballads and catchy melodies, all interspersed with deep lyrical imagery. The wide range of influences amongst the different members of the band means that aether's music never fits into any one genre.
With a drummer change and the loss of a guitarist along the way, aether's line-up currently consists of Derek Shanks (vocals/guitar), Ross Brownlie (bass/vocals) and Rick Abel (percussion). On a few songs, they are also joined by Susan Brownlie (cello) and Carolyn Johnston (flute). These line-up hurdles have never caused a problem, and aether are happily performing as a 3-piece band at the moment for most of their songs. In fact, they have been told that their live sound as a 3-piece is so full that they do not need another permanent member and so they will continue to experiment further with cello and flute and are about to enter the world of samples too.
In the short time they have been together, aether have completed over 15 gigs, have had several great reviews of their music, gigs and website, have had radio airplay, have appeared on television and, towards the end of last year, released their debut EP 'Soulgate' on their own independent label, Spook Records, which they formed in order to release their own material. In fact, the original batch of Soulgate sold out in about 3 months! They continue to gig all over Scotland, will be appearing on TV again shortly and have plans to record again in summer 2002. One of their immediate plans is a short tour around Scotland at the end of June with a visiting American band and most of the dates for this tour have now been confirmed.
The band's EP has been described as “a very close second to their live performances”, which can be understood by the reputation the band are beginning to gain for energetic, powerful live sets. It is during live performances that aether truly excel and it remains their immediate goal to continue to strengthen their live act and to continue to write new material.
