Artist description
Smith and Bruer Band is a new collaboration between Canadian guitarist Tony Smith and Australian saxophonist Jason Bruer, who both moved to London in the later 1980's. Tony Smith's funky guitar style and Jason Bruer's soulful sax, combines perfectly to produce an exciting and highly accessible sound.
They are both now well established on the UK scene, and have gained widespread respect within London's competitive music industry. Between them they have played and recorded with a veritable Who's Who of the music business including Roy Ayres, Eric Clapton, Jocelyn Brown, Van Morrison, BB King, Jools Holland R&B Orchestra and Ray Gaskins to name but a few.
Smith and Bruer, whilst having some obvious jazz influences, is essentially a groove-based, R&B band. They have put together an original, funky set, which is sax and guitar led, but also features the exciting sounds of the Hammond organ, electric bass and drums courtesy of Richard Simmons, Phil Scragg and Adam Roman.

Press Reviews
“Direct from Planet Groove (via North London). Canadian guitarist Tony Smith and Aussie Saxman Jason Bruer have, between them, played with the likes of Roy Ayres, Paul Weller, Ray Gaskins and Sting. Searching For A Cool Basement, their debut as co-leaders, is a hard edged but accessible mix of jazz, funk and rhythm n blues. 10 original compositions ranging from the testifyin gospel/soul of "But Man…Man" to the self explanatory "Coarse Cut Funk" Smith plays taut funky guitar lines, turning up the heat for some high intensity solos. Bruer’s sound is big toned and dripping with soul. There’s a pure joy in their playing that just shines out. Well worth tracking down.” (Jamie Renton) Straight No Chaser – September 2001 |
