Floor Creak: The Official Story The band known as Floor Creak came into being at approximately 3:30 AM one Sunday morning last fall, probably mid-September, though memories are a bit sketchy. What is beyond dispute is that the place of birth was a log cabin in Faquier County, Virginia, owned by Katheen Thomas, a local singing sensation and woman of reputation. Kathleen, known to most as Kathie, was hosting a picking party, and by 3:30 everyone was out of songs save for Dave Shiflett, whose reserved man ner and lack of singing skills had left his repertoire mostly untouched. At a moment chosen by Fate or some allied Power, Joe Dejarnette, known to friends and creditors as Joe Bass, asked Dave if he had any songs left. At this point, Dave played and san g (somewhat badly) a new song he had written entitled "Time Goes Rushing By." It was a sparse presentation, all present agree, and none too easy on the ears of the deeply grogged audience. Yet it succeeded in penetrating Kathleen's tough exterior and eve n steelier heart. The next day, she admitted to having heard the melody and refrain throughout a fitful sleep. She asked if more songs were available. The CD evolved from that magic moment. It contains 12 original songs, including the still sparse but m u ch better-sung title cut, plus a cover of Sally Barris' "Last Drink of Wine." The songs were all written by Dave - with Nashville stalwart Jackson Leap co-writing the very Nashvillian "Rules of Goodbye." Those who know current music categories say the a lb um leans toward Folk and Alternative County, along with a couple of somewhat jazzy numbers and perhaps the first known instance of SambaGrass. There is a Deep Ballad or two, but nothing that drips. While the band is at core a trio and benefits from s ome guitar overdubs on this disk, Kathie, Joe and Dave are joined by several friends, including Will Perkinson on mandolin, Kevin Carr on banjo, Barbara Kay on fiddle, Christian Shiflett on guitar, and Mickie Thomas, Kathie's 14-year-old daughter, on supp ort ing vocals. Kathie sings lead on all the songs, and as those who have heard Dave and Joe sing would readily agree: Be very glad of that. Kathie, Joe and Dave are all Renaissance People, which is to say they do not limit themselves to one activity in lif e, which is to say all three have day jobs, most of the time. Kathie is a librarian, which is convenient since Dave is a freelance writer whose books Kathie can purchase and put on her shelves. His titles include Donald Trump's latest work, The Amer ica W e Deserve, which can still be found in America's better junk shops, novelty stores, and landfills. He also writes for such publications as The Wall Street Journal, Reader's Digest, Investor's Business Daily, and has a weekly column on National Revie w Onli ne. He will write your laundry list for a buck a word, or reasonable barter. As for Joe, he is currently battling a remarkably short stint of workaholism through an abstinence program, which is to say that Joe really hasn't worked full time going on half a year and is none the worse for wear as a result. He was the recording engineer on "Time Goes Rushing By," meaning he not only played bass on the recordings, but recorded them, mixed them, and mastered them. And he still likes them. We hope yo u will too. We greatly appreciate your support. Joe especially. Before signing off, we would like to address a question posed by many: Where did we get the name Floor Creak? The answer comes in two parts. One has to do with competition. We also consider ed Hayb aby, Premeditated Buzzard, Tunes d'etrois (spelling approximate), and Dave's favorite, The Grim Coots. These names are still available and free for the taking. No attribution necessary. Floor Creak came along as a result of late-night recording session s in Dave's upstairs den, the hallway to which contains loose floorboards which creaked each time our beer sherpas passed over them. This inspired Kathie to come up with Floor Creak. We thought it was pretty good, for a librarian. Dave, meanwhile, came up with a new song title as a result of the creaking: "Don't Wake the Wife," which will be on our next CD. In the meantime contact dave Dshifl@aol.com to get a copy of the current album. Thanks for coming by! -Floor Creak. ˇo
