Artist History
Born in the year 2000, wacMCs is a project whose seeds had been sown many years previously.
The first spark came in 1998, when old school friends Jake and Simon, at the time living at opposite ends of the country, collaborated on a track which featured on a Southampton-based compilation, 3 Types of Shit (Integrity For Sale). The result, Charlie, was a bizarre melange of jungle beats, old jazz samples, and a modern verbal hip-hop assault.
Two years later, both Simon and Jake had moved to London, and it wasn’t long before their creative pot began to boil over…
In a small bedroom in North London, strange things were afoot, and after a day of hard graft, wacMCs was born, in the form of their first track, Amateur Night, a traditional hip-hop joint featuring a sample from the opera Carmina Burana.
Though they went to school together, Jake and Simon’s musical background couldn’t be more different. Jake is a classically trained percussionist, once played drums in a Europop act and has been writing dance music for several years. Simon, on the other hand, used to sing and play guitar in an alternative rock band.
They both came together over a mutual love of hip-hop, and the feeling that too many acts were getting lazy, while the industry was getting bogged down with ganstas and Bling-Bling.
Enter MC sfX and producer JR, as wacMCs: The hip-hop alternative, combining modern musical beats, vocal harmonies, bullshit-free lyrics, catchy choruses and (whisper it!) a sense of humour.
The year 2002 is when you can expect to see wacMCs really blowing up. With new songs, new equipment, and new haircuts, they look like one group who won’t be staying underground for much longer…
