Press Reviews
Linda Cook (Localmusicstore.com) reviewing
"Still Like to Rock and Roll" (our latest)
There's no catch to this band. What you think you're going to hear is
exactly what you're going to get: Solid, rockin' original tunes written
and played by folks who have performed together for years. The Catch,
hailing from Virginia, is made up of four guys who obviously have done
some growing up together. You can tell by the name of their CD, "Still
Like to Rock ... and Roll!'' that they've been around for a while, and,
judging from the lyrics in their songs and the liner notes, not to mention
their great music, they have day jobs and family obligations outside their
performance dates. One of their best numbers -- shades of Seger!-- is
"Still Like to Rock." Written and sung by the whiskey-voiced Bob Crerie
(we also hear him on electric guitars and acoustic guitar), this features
nicely wrought guitar work and a beat that's bound to get their listeners
on the dance floor (there's even a nifty piano solo a la The Killer). Other
tunes, such as Milton Bullock's "Check is In the Mail" and "Keep on
Movin''' have a definite blues-rock groove that most likely was influenced
by the likes of the Doobie Brothers and the Guess Who. Bullock and Crerie
wrote all the songs and sing lead on their respective works, which are
delivered deftly and must be absolutely wicked to enjoy live. Their rock
flows into blues in numbers such as "Mr. Understanding," which boasts a
blues-tinged, Joe Walsh-esque heavy beat and even a little talkin' blues,
with a thoroughly enjoyable organ riff at the end.The lyrics deal with
loves lost and found, such as the words to "Hurricane Girl": "Batten down
the hatches. Hold on tight. You're gonna have a hurricane girl tonight."
In "All You Got to Say is Yes," Bullock talks about a relationship between
two unmarried people who "have fun without a complicated series of vows."
I liked the whole CD. But when I play it again, I have to hear the
shortest cut first. "My Baby She Left Me'' is a true, unadulterated rocker
with hotternhell guitar licks and sizzling keyboards set against an
infectious backbeat that will have me dancing around my living room again.
These guys can really play, and their music is mostly no-frills, which is
a definite compliment. Sometimes, as with The Catch, less is more. The
band simply delivers great vocals and instrumental work that isn't mucked
up by special effects or high-falutin' orchestral additions. It's what
rock and roll was meant to be: Hard-driving, honest and fun. I still like
to rock and roll too, guys. Thanks!
