Press Reviews
SIRSY, AWAY FROM HERE (sirsymusic, CD) Hailing from Albany, New York, Sirsy
specialize in slightly funkified, grrl-powered modern rock. The quartet’s second album,
Away From Here, offers 10 new songs that further perfect their hook-laden punch. From
the first smoky, jazzy bass notes of opener “She Says”, Sirsy sound like a band coming
into its own. Guitarist Mike Steiner, bassist Richard Libutti and drummer Greg Nash play
off each other effortlessly, creating a super-tight backdrop for vocalist Melanie Krahmer.
The main attraction in the band, she has a voice capable of both a lion’s roar and a floaty
whisper. The instrumentalists wisely leave plenty of aural space to be filled with Krahmer’s
soulful moan.
The songs on Away From Here are fairly uncomplicated pop-rock tracks that manage to
sound familiar and radio-friendly while retaining a casual, bar-band feel. “Paper Moon”
offers shimmering guitar licks and rattling percussion; Krahmer’s vocals alternate between
a seductive croon on the verses and a cathartic release on the chorus
“Kiss Me Here” kicks the disc up a notch with a stuttering funk riff and
“come-and-get-me-if-you-dare” lyrics. On this and “Please Let Me Be”, the band manages
to mix funk and pop into an infectious groove that sounds like a less bratty No Doubt.
The remainder of the album cruises through similar tunes which prove this outfit is
uniquely talented --especially Krahmer -- though Sirsy never try to overreach an
accessible, mid-tempo rock formula. Though they’re not charting any new musical
territory, Sirsy are collectively more skillful than a fair number of artists who’ve found
themselves in the modern pop-rock spotlight. (Ethan Covey, Seven Days Newspaper)."Sirsy has an uncanny knack for handling well-worn song themes in an original way. These diversified players and their gifted female vocalist incorporate a wide array of influences without ever sounding derivative." (www.audiogalaxy.com , Jan 2000)We were pleased to receive your package and even more
pleased when we heard your disc. “This Time” (my
favorite track on “Baggage”) has a gorgeous intro. The
Spanish guitar work is a beautiful precursor to a great
pop song. The arpeggiated vocals dance nicely atop the acoustic guitar harmonics and
strumming, rock-solid bass playing and semi-automatic machine drum gun beat. The lyrics
are classy and quirky enough to capture the ears of college radio listeners all over the
continent and the music is catchy without being hackneyed. “Soft Like A Girl” and “Let Go”
are both well-produced epic-sounding tracks. It’s rare that I get the opportunity to hear
superior slow songs that don’t sound artificial and simulated. Sirsy is a substantial, air-tight
assemblage of some of the finest funk-based, urban pop I’ve had the pleasure to experience.
Somewhere between Hendrix’s Band of Gypsies, Lisa Loeb, Janis Joplin, Aretha, P-Funk, and
the New Bohemians are tucked nice and neatly the sounds of sirsy. (Pete Knapp, Shut Eye Records, President).
