Artist History
Resin’s Julie Vik is one of Canada’s most strikingly individualistic songwriters. Her unique musical sensibility has had reviewers scrambling to describe it as ‘trip folk’, ‘art funk’ and simply ‘not normal’. Perhaps the singularity of her writing can be explained in terms of intent; she aims to make music that affects the listener on a molecular level, music that stretches, pulls, and shifts energy to send you on a Wonderland-like trip. And while audience members may ask if someone has tampered with their beer, that doesn’t stop them from getting up to dance.
The name Resin was given to the first band incarnation of Vik on vocals and guitar, Moritz Behm on violin, and Corbin Keep on cello back in 1996 to describe not only the substance that makes strings sing but also the trippy, earthy folk grooves that the three created together. The self-titled CD resin was released in 1998. Produced by Colin Nairne, the recording process let Vik experiment with a fuller band sound that led in turn to a new direction in her writing.
Today Alex Varty on electric guitar and noises fills the role of emotional interpreter. Building on experience gained playing with the likes of AKA, John Oswald, Dead Voices on Air, Veda Hille, and Chris Houston’s Evil Twang, Varty has a gift for intuitively accessing otherworldly yet apt textures. On a recent tour through Ontario, Hamilton’s View wrote “Guitarist Alex Varty approaches his instrument not so much as a musician but more as a painter, adding splashes of sonic color to the band’s vibe.” The current touring incarnation of the group also draws on the interplay of bassist Travis Baker and drummer Joel Lower, jazz-trained musicians and groove fetishists whose kinetic approach brings a further touch of improvisational flair to the funk.
Resin has performed at North American Folk Alliance 2001 (Vancouver)NewMusic West 2000, 2001 (Vancouver), Canadian Music Week 2000 (Toronto), NorthWest Folk Life 1998,1997 (Seattle), CBC and Songline Record’s Tribute to Nick Drake 1999 (Vancouver) WomenMusic International 1998 (Nashville) and Bumbershoot 1997 (Seattle). Recordings are available through their website at www.resin.net, amazon.com, cdnow.com and indiepool.com, with the new CD Only Here, produced by Colin Nairne and Junkhouse guitarist Dan Achen, slated for release in the spring of 2002.

Press Reviews
“the wetness, the dryness...beautiful.” Jane Siberry—1999
"The pleasant surprise of the week is happening this weekend at the Corktown as Resin returns to town to play their very original brand of trip folk...led by Julie Vik...complete with full-throated delivery and lyrics that float in between direct and esoteric...Recently a board mix of a Resin show made it into [my stack] and suddenly the special dynamics of the group leapt out of the speakers and grabbed me by the ears." Alex Erasmi, View 2000 (Hamilton, Ont.)
"...these BC natives play loopy genre-dodging music - something like Mad Mama Moon on crack" The Local Planet May 2001 (Spokane, WA)
"...tastefully played art-funk with jazzy moments of improvisation...worth seeing." The Georgia Straight May 2001 (Vancouver, BC)
“...an epic set. The band actually sounded better live than it did on the album...In a music scene topped with sound-alike rock acts and shallow lyricists, Resin's dark, contemplative music and Vik's twisted diction is a challenge indeed...it's not normal. Nothing about Resin is normal.” Stephan Dubowski, The Courier (Toronto)- Dec.’99
“...their vocalist has an amazingly strong and powerful voice. It’s absolutely beautiful. Their sound is definitely different, but extraordinary. They are everything they described themselves as, and some.” Darle Nelson, exposeyourself.cjb.net
“Resin also features some of the best performances by local musicians likely to be committed to disc this year.” John Lucas, The Georgia Straight Aug.’99
“This recording [resin– self-titled] delicately balances acoustic instrumentation with tastefully performed electronic nuances….Recommended” Monte Nordstrom, Cosmic Debris– Feb.’99
“Did you guys put something in the beer?” An audience member, Dec.’99
