Naked Lunch is a band whose music is a hybrid of metal and industrial with some pieces wandering into the realm of goth. On their latest CD, Everything Dies, we can hear elements of electro-metal (Wonderful), percussion based electro (Continue to Breathe) and an almost perfect cover of Joy Division's Transmission especially with the vocals and guitar. Undone is one of the harder pieces, combining death metal vocals with harsh sequences and rifling guitars. Mxyzptlk's vocals on I Was A God are delivered in more of a gothic tone, which works well when placed over top of the music, which is comprised of lighter, metal guitar riffs, vicious beats, EBM sequences (much like synth-pop) heavy guitars, and echoing vocals. Lamdy and the Vamp is a hard gothic piece with distant drums and vigorous guitar riffs. It took me a few listens before I began to truly appreciate what Naked Lunch is doing and now that I've been hooked in, I can say that this is a very mature and varied release from this Michigan quintet.

Naked Lunch Everything Dies
I first met Mxyzptlk outside a club in Grand Rapids. Well, actually, that's the only time I actually spoke to him face-to-face. He game me a tape of his then band, Konnichi Wah ( I have missed the performance by a few minutes), and I was knocked out by the music and particularly by the sound. That band died days after I got the tape, but I've heard bits and snippets of his new project, Naked Lunch (demo and a couple tracks on compilations), and I've remained impressed. Okay, so he goes by the moniker Mxyzptlk these days, but the music is the same sample heavy monster guitar industrial stuff that has always amazed me. There are gothic elements (Naked Lunch is very cold wave in that respect), but the core at each of the songs is the heavy riffage. The songs don't rely so much on samples as before (an improvement), though at times I do detect the impulse to do too much, rather than leave the sound a bit more sparse. I'm a big proponent of |
