Artist History
Formed in early 1998 by bassist, Jeremy Smith, guitarist, Isaac Contreras and drummer, Zak Smith. The three struck a chord and recruited four members of Zak's old ska band, The Halfwits. They were keyboardist, Justin Pires, trumpet player, Fausto Ruiz, trombone player, Eddy Ruiz and saxist, Tim Ninnink. The band played out of Contreras' garage until mid-July, '98. They had polished off four songs and played one gig at a graduation party. In early August, Contreras' conflicting schedule caused him to leave the band. He was soon replaced by guitarist, "Crazy" Dave Onate and vocalist, Tobin Williams was also asked to join. This eight-member band played it's first gig at a Halloween party in '98. Soon after, percussionist, Mark Radelow joined the band to add a funkier touch to the rhythm section. C.A.Jones recorded a two-track demo at Golden Track Records in San Diego. In April of 1999, "Crazy" Dave left C.A.Jones. Guitarist, Scott Davis then came into the picture. After playing a number of gigs in early to mid-'99, the band then brought in a woman's touch to the vocal section. Kelly Morris lightened up C.A.Jones' male-driven songs with her Janis Joplin/Etta James sound that you hear from the band today. The band continued to play a number of shows at local San Diego venues. C.A.Jones recorded it's debut 11-track album at Studio West in San Diego in August of 2000. In Sept ember of 2000, Tim left San Diego to be schooled at the Berklee school of music. We all miss him. The album, "Nine Ways To Sunday" should be ready by mid - 2001. |

Press Reviews
DigitalCity.comC.A. Jones Multidimensional jazz with alternative rock. A wealth of keyboards and horns combines multidimensional, mature jazz with the boyish tenor trademark of alternative rock to produce some wonderfully original and textured music. Lead singer Toby Williams injects an injured puppy whine into this amalgam of complexity and Miss Kelly adds significant heft singing backup harmonies. The end result is something you need to hear for yourself, since odds are you haven't heard anything like it before. -- Dylan Roberts |
