Press Reviews
Despite the minimalist nature of everything to do with AKITA1 (none of the tracks have titles), this album should not be overlooked as a credible creative work- infact, the subtle nature of the music demands a closer look (and alot of patience on the part of the listener). The broad theme of what happens when the machines take over was first considered by Kraftwerk, and has since been copied by hundereds of bedroom electronic artists all over the world- but never has it been interpreted in quite this way. Sure there are the usual ominous undertones, but Yohiro manages to maintain some kind of inner calm throughout. Less of a violent takover, more a quiet subtle coup. '011' expresses a crushing nazi-like quality, but still manages to convey an air of tranquility and ambivilance, while the sheer hipnotic beauty of '100' leads you to beleive that AKITA1 has just maybe already taken over. The old tag of 'headphones album' would definately apply here, the listener is required to feel every subtle change in tone and implied harmonics, it just doesn't work as background music. Although not everything in this album hits it's respective targets, it is still worth one or two attentive late-night listens. If this is what it's going to be like when the machines take over, then I want to be there! |
