Press Reviews
The only major flaw in Vassline's EP, "Bloodthirsty," is that it is way too short. The rest of this review is superfluous; this one sentence is all a reader must know.
Vassline is a Seoul "Newskool HxC", band with several years of experience and a strong fan base. The music is intense in a way few bands can equal - with such poetry and talent, referring to it as heavy metal would be an insult.
Vassline sings in English, and despite the occasional oddity, the lyrics are fluid and original. Interspersed between oppressive riffs and quiet melodies is stream of consciousness poetry. Poetry is an overused term for well-written lyrics, but in this case, it's completely appropriate.
In the interest of fair reviewing, "Bloodthirsty" has a few flaws. If one thinks about it for a while, one might realize that using sound clips of rain is cliche. The guitar solo in the song, "The Only Way," sounds a little too 80s' metal. Sometimes the lyrics don't make sense.
Yes, these criticisms are flippant. But they serve to illustrate how hard it is to find flaws in a band that can be so expressive without watering down its approach.
Vassline's music is hard to describe. It mixed heavy thrash and ballad-esque guitar work, sometimes simultaneously. Shin Woo-suk painfully and earnestly howls like a victim of torture. Yun Hong-gu's drumming, though, is irreplaceable. This band would be lost without a man who can get so much from a double-bass pedal.
"Boredom in the Pressure," a duet with Samchong's vocalist Suh Dong-hyuk, is the most powerful track. No band in or out of Korea can bottle up so much intensity in under two minutes.
This is the major problem with "Bloodthirsty" - a listener needs more than 20 minutes. Vassline must satisfy our demands for more, and must do it soon. (BJ)
