Artist description
The New York City based alt/pop/rock band Pacific Boy Standing (PBS) was formed in 1999 by Lucas Penido (Vocals), Leo Neves (Bass), “Ace” (Lead Guitar), Nelson Neveus (Drums) and Jay Martin (Rhythm Guitar). Within less than half a year PBS hit Electric Plant Studios in Brooklyn to record their debut, independent album entitled “The Trip.” The CD was a local hit and sold many copies. The band hit the road playing in NYC as well as some venues in the Northeast. By mid 2000 PBS had performed as opening acts for such bands as 3 Doors Down, Third Eye Blind, Vertical Horizon, Splender, Eve 6, Marvelous three, and many others. PBS also performed on a handful of TV programs such as Queens Public Access and The Metro channel. PBS held the #1 spot on Musictv.com chart as the best band in NYC. PBS also received great reviews from the press such as The Village Voice, who called the band, “The Next U2.”
In late 2000/ Spring 2001 the band experienced some changes: a new name (Soul What), two new band members, and a new recorded EP. Danny Spaight replaced Nelson Neveus on drums, and Sean McKenna replaced Jay Martin on rhythm guitar. The band then entered Media Recording Studios in Long Island NY to work with legendary producer Steve Young (Worked with many Def Jam, RCA artists as well as Aerosmith, In Living Color, LL Cool J, and a host of others.) The self titled EP Soul What was clearly Soul What’s best work to date. Due to Lucas Pendio's Brazilian heritage the EP was recorded both as an English version and a Portuguese version. In addition to this, other songs sung only in Portuguese were recorded for separate release. A reviewer on Gigdates.net commented, “I found myself listening to it several times just for my own pleasure. The lyrics are mostly about relationships and love, with even one being dedicated to Lucas' father called "Dad's Lifestyle." The last three songs were live versions, which gave me the appetite to check them out live soon! I am sure these guys are going to go places.”
2001 was a busy year for Soul What. Concentrating on the NYC circuit, Soul What has been playing at The Elbow Room, CBGB’s, The Lions Den, Arlene grocery and many more. A particular highlight was playing at the NYC Brazilian parade in front of more than 50,000 people. Additionally, Soul What’s EP first track “Pros & Cons” was selected to appear on a west coast compilation put out by Heyday Records, an independent California record label.
In 2002 Soul What began working with GKMG Productions, a NY based band marketing and promotions company, to get the band more exposure in different markets. Soul What’s energetic live show is always a crowd pleaser and draws a nice crowd where ever they play. Anyone that sees Soul What perform becomes an instant fan. Soul What’s hard work, dedication, and song writing skills prove that Soul What will be a force to reckon with in the near future.
