“Casey counts ‘em down!” She hits the record button on her tape player as the Top 40 Countdown continues. As usual, she has her stereo blaring, even though her parents keep coming up to her room and telling her to turn it down. As the music starts, the young girl sings her heart out as if she is performing for millions of screaming fans. That’s when it hits her, she’s going to make a life out of this! Julie Roseland was born on August 6, 1977. She is originally from the small town of Thornton, Iowa, whose population boasts around 300. Her love of music began at a very early age. Influenced by her father, she began piano lessons at the age of four. She continued to formally study piano for 17 continuous years. When she was 10, she began flute lessons, and at the age of 14, took up the acoustic, electric, and bass guitars. Julie attended Sheffield-Chapin/Meservey-Thornton High School and graduated in 1995. While in high school, she played the piccolo, drums, flute, bass guitar and piano in several various bands. She took home a solo award in every jazz band competition in high school, both regional and state levels. She was also an active participant in the concert and swing choirs, singing all parts from low alto to first soprano. Her senior year at S-C/M-T, she received the Outstanding Vocalist Award and the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award. After graduating from high school, Julie attended NIACC on both a flute and piano scholarship. She studied classical flute, classical piano, as well as contemporary and classical voice. It was at NIACC that she auditioned and became a member of the prestigious vocal ensemble, NIACC Singers. While she was in NIACC Singers, the group toured in the Midwest and also throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Julie gave the first ever solo piano recital at the college. After obtaining her A.A. Degree in 1997 from NIACC, she continued on to the University of Northern Iowa on a piano scholarship. There she participated in the UNI Singers vocal ensemble and studied piano with former Julliard professor and recording artist, Howard Aibel. In 1998, she transferred to Berklee College of Music as a vocal and piano scholarship recipient. Her principal instrument was voice and her focus at Berklee consisted of performance, songwriting, and film scoring. While attending Berklee, she began writing, producing, and engineering her own recordings as well. She performed in a variety of genres as a soloist with a band as well as accompanying herself on piano. She worked live and in the studio as a lead vocalist and songwriter as well as a background vocalist. She received her bachelor’s degree from Berklee College of Music in May of 2001, with a degree in Professional Music. She is currently shopping for a record deal.
