Artist History
In the beginning, there was weirdom
3/4/1995, in Munich's "Pulverturm":
Nine madmen were jumping across the stage, insanely bashing the drums or
honking their horns and knocking around peanuts, peanut-flips and peanut-butter.
That was the first concert of the young beNUTS! Who could imagine that this was
only the beginning of a success-story with hundreds of concerts in Germany and
elsewhere?
This fact is even more astonishing if one considers that everything began rather
randomly: Daniel, the drummer of the German ska band "The Braces" and Pedro,
sax-player at "Skaos", met each other in one of the Bavarian drinking halls. They
were familiar since the two bands toured the UK together in the late eigthies
(together with BimSkalaBim and Bad Manners) and because neither of the bands
was very active in 1994, they decided to start a new band consisting of sick weirdos
in the world's center of beer-drinking: Munich!
Shortly later, the first beNUTS lineup was complete: Daniel and Pedro, furthermore
Eerie Eddi at the guitar, Marc the Maniac with his organ, Earl of Ødl on bass, the
nutty trombone player Max, Doc Müller on tenor saxophone and Stoffi on trumpet. It
was a little bit more difficult to find a singer who was really insane, but they finally
convinced Ralf, the dry-cell-battery (9V), to join the band.
The first year ended successful with a short tour through Switzerland, where beNUTS
played internationally for their first time. It showed up that not all the nutters were
hard enough to endure the hard every-day life of a beNUTS tour: Doc Müller left the
band. Additionally, Pedro said goodbye: He could not overcome the temptation to
rejoin his former band Skaos.
Three Tone Ska
Of course, this did not dispirit the rest of the group, and quickly the new sax-player
Marvin Mad was poached from a local padded cell testing institute for a fair sum. To
regain the money, the band signed their first record deal with Artysan Records in
1996. After the studio session, the band started a tour through Germany, Austria and
Switzerland to promote the CD 3 Tone Ska consisting of 17 songs and being longer
than one hour.
With success: The CD was not only a big seller in Germany but also reached the
Top-Ten of many College Radios in the US and Canada. beNUTS (or Bee Nuts, how
they were mis-spelled by The Sledge, trumpet player from the Toasters) also
contributed to international samplers. One of these, Skandalous, I've gotcha
coverered, which also includes songs from The Skatalites, BimSkalaBim and the
Toasters reached number 67 in the US CMJ Independent Charts.
This was too much for organ player Marc the Maniac, who left the band in a fit of
complete mentual confusion. He was replaced by Otze Zengpeng, a handball player.
(Handball is a very funny German game, where everybody tries to throw a small,
heavy ball into the face of the goalkeeper).
Cpt Rude
In 1998, beNUTS released their second album, Captain Rude, beeing celebrated by
TV and radio stations all over Germany. To promote the CD, they travelled into as
remote regions of Europe as Husum or Ilirska Bistrica.
This success also attracted a bunch of sponsors: The VW-Sound Foundation
provided two brand new tour-busses. It was the first time after several years that Fred
Perry decided to sponsor a band again, the last band having this privilege being
nobody else than The Who. Because beNUTS is a Bavarian band, it did not take too
long for the first breweries showing their interest. Finally, after an extensive test and
a lengthy discussion, the eigth weirdos agreed on giving Eittinger Fischerbräu the
opportunity to deliver free beer to their rehearsal room.
Unfortunatly, the band had to suffer a severe set back, because Ralf 1000 Volt, man!
had to leave the band. In the next two years, sundry new singers were tried, but
nobody could reach the level of Ralf.
Haching
Nevertheless, in summer 1999, the band released the maxi-single Haching, devoted
to one of the excellent Munich soccer clubs, which then entered the first national
league for the first time. Because the search for a good (and nutty) new singer and
frontman had been without success, trumpet player Stoffi had to accept these jobs,
too. Everything went pretty well for a short time, but after a last tour through Austria
and Slowenia, different points of view showed up in the band. Not all of the band's
members were any longer willing to spend the time for all the concerts and so the
band dis-band-ed in summer 2000.
beNUTS again
But it did not take long for a part of the band to find together again. After an intensive
search for offbeat-addicted maniacs and sleepless nights of rehearsals the band
returned to the European stages in early 2001. In the meantime, the band had also
enough time and beer to create some new, really sick songs.
The "new" beNUTS consists of the insane Hungro-Canadian bassist Ødl, sax-player
Marvin, "who gives you the willies", the Nutty Max (trombone) and of course
Demented Daniel, the ska-drummer with the highest age of service in Germany. Also
aboard are the screwy Otze-Zengpeng as well as the cloned guitar-player Jens, who
was created by Eddi in his own image and in the image of Enzo from Skaos in a
terribly wrong-going experiment. Because no madman could be found who was able
to sing and play the trumpet, Stoffi had to be replaced by not one but two new
maniacs. This opened the way for Newton and Einstein, two physicists who consider
themselves to be Sebastian and Silvester.
And so our weirdos can look into a bright future. Their timetable is full, the beer is
flowing into their rehearsal room. And just because it's fun they recorded a new
album, called:
Nutty by Nature
including the 16 nuttiest songs ever heard by human ears. Of course, such a thing
has to be celebrated, on Oct. the 20th, there will be a record-release party in
Munich's "Feierwerk". Beside an extra long concert, you can look forward to an
after-show party with DJ-Fusel from Vienna.
Then, beNUTS will be on the road again, this time with Bad Manners from the UK ...
What´s left to say?
Stay nuts and keep on masturbating ...
