Artist History
Who inspired us to play jazz?
Ellen:
It was the piano that brought me to jazz. The first time I can remember really wanting to play jazz was when I heard a jazz pianist named Ann Collins playing a concert at our local state university in Macomb, Illinois, USA. The tune was My Funny Valentine and I thought to myself,“I sure wish I could play like that.“I was ten years old and a promising young classical pianist at the time. It took me another ten years and meeting my future husband, Bernd, before I completely devoted myself to playing jazz.
Bernd:
My father heard Louis Armstrong live while he was a prisoner of war in USA during the second world war. He liked Armstrong´s music and bought a few records upon his return to Germany. I loved to listen to them as a boy. I received a trumpet on my 14th birthday and began to play.
