Press Reviews
60bpm Review: I'm reviewing this studio album only a couple days after seeing the band live and watching the performance on videotape a couple of times. It's hard to review a studio album after seeing a band live. However, traditionally I'm a fan of studio albums as opposed to live performances. In SOA's case, though, I have to go with seeing them live. This being a studio album, it does have its advantages. First and foremost is the fact that you can HEAR everything: all the instruments, samples, sequencing, etc. I didn't realize how much was used in the band. "plane of consistency" is an example. It sounds like some jazz/techno mix, due to its heavy use of electronic drums in the beginning, but the entire live set comes in and out towards the end. One of my picks is "metronome bachelor crib" 'cause it's got this breakdown that makes me think of some club scene from a 60s art film. My favorite track is "colorless green ideas". It's not afraid to be ten and a half minutes long, and again it's got that 60s psychedelic trip-out action going-on in the middle and end. As one last note, I also like studio albums because they provide a sort of "frame of reference" for a band's material. More or less, they give you an idea of what the songs should sound like, in regards to composition and instrumentation. So while a studio album may lack the energy and spontaneity of a live performance, it makes this up through high fidelity and exceptional execution. |
