Artist History
Twenty-two year old multi-instumentalist Rachel Eddy has been singing on stage since the age of four. At age nine, after years of singing Old Time songs with her family, she found interest in the fiddle. Living in rural northern West Virginia made it hard to work with a full-time, professional instructor. So Rachel learned a few bits from her father and a few pieces from her friends. With a bare minimum of instruction, she began to teach herself any and every fiddle tune of her Appalachian home. By the time she was twelve, Rachel had competed in several regional competitons and even won the Maryland State Championship, Junior Division. At fourteen, Rachel was presented with a local scholarship to attend Augusta, a famous traditional arts program held annually in Elkins, WV. While at Augusta, she met Winifred Horan, the fiddle sensation of Solas fame, who was a guest instructor for Irish Week. Winnie took a special interest in Rachel and spent extra time with her on individual instruction. The young fiddler went home from that experience overwhelmed with inspiration, practicing at full-throttle. Rachel set out to learn every song she could capture to tape and learn by ear. This process included a weekly ritual of recording NPR's Thistle & Shamrock, the esteemed forum of Celtic music. The following year, Rachel and Winnie both returned to Augusta, resuming efforts from the previous Summer. The next year, the Irish Week fiddle students were under the tutelage of one of the world's most renowned and respected artists, Brendan Mulvihill. At sixteen, Rachel Eddy was accepted into the prestigious Governor's School for the Arts where she learned and played with the best young musicians in the state of West Virginia. After high school, she began teaching privately and playing in several regional bands. Rachel currently has many full-time students and has become one of the most sought after teachers and performers in West Virginia. When she's not teaching or playing gigs, you can usually find Rachel playing in weekly sessions or visiting schools to introduce traditional music and instruments the next generation. - bio by WjS |
